All of the ones I have seen (far from a long list) use either 4 or 5 digits to pair to the phone, with the PIN being either all zeros, all ones, or a straight sequence starting at one. Something other than that is a good start, but that's all it is - a start.

Still, what is currently a low probability is going to grow. Low-density defense is why so few Mac computers had virus issues - it was more productive to go after the greater number of PCs. That's changing, however, and people who developed the habit of thinking "It's a Mac, so I don't worry" are now getting bit.

BTW, I use the Automatic dongle with DashCommand on OS X and it works great, love it. Very useful for making sure the engine is fully warmed up before I get into some shenanigans.

Realistically, the first level of security should be a hardware means of setting the adapter into broadcast mode, rather than having them open to anyone who tries. Hell, even a BT mouse has that.

Again, low probability event, as many of the BT OBD plugs don't do any of it at all, so it's easier to go after the low hanging fruit before chasing a unit with a custom security scheme. And since I haven't spent any time looking at the Automatic adapter, it's implementation of security might be far higher than I am assuming. Still, if there isn't a hardware "pair now" button, the dongle is vulnerable to a brute force attack on the pairing PIN. Pushes it to an even lower probability - first you need to be found by an attacker looking for that type of adapter, then the attacker needs enough time to brute force a large number of codes, all while the adapter remains active on the ECU.

What could some nefarious criminals do once they gained access?

Here's a mildly amusing example of what you can do with poorly thought out access systems: http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/40505.html Again, low probability. Still, isn't zero. To my knowledge, there hasn't been a car theft on my street in the 30 years we've lived there. Doesn't mean I'm going to start leaving my car unlocked in the driveway with the fob in the cupholder.

Ah, I see. That makes sense. If only the iSaddle had a POPO toggle switch on the outside of the unit. That way I could keep it plugged in at all times and just toggle it off and on as needed. Maybe I'll contact them or take the unit apart and see if I can fabricate one myself.

Well, I took apart the iSaddle to see where I could add the switch and then decided that I'd have to remove solder to really get to where I wanted to get. Anyway, I found a dongle that has a built-in power switch already. It'll be awhile until it gets here though, so for the time being I'll continue to either not care about it being plugged up or unplug it. Just depends on where I am.
In the long run I'm going to search for a more integrated solution. It'll probably be one of the last things I do though as I don't really mind the current setup too much. I'll post an update when the new unit comes in.

Got the new unit in today from Amazon. The on/off switch works like a champ. Took a bit more trial and error to get it connected to my phone. Once I did oil temps worked, so I'm happy. Not as plug and forget as the scan tool model, but i'm happy with this for now.
http://www.amazon.com/Elm327-Bluetoo...ilpage_o00_s00 ***Update*** Well, that thing was a bust. It worked for a few days, but now I'm having connection issues. Sometimes Torque just doesn't see it unless I bounce Bluetooth on the phone or toggle the device off and on which is a bit of an annoyance when you're driving. Going back to iSaddle. Interesting note about the iSaddle. When the vehicle is off no data is transmitted to it. Not sure if this means that it's an auto shut-off feature of the dongle or if that's just how the vehicle operates. Idk. Just an added detail for those that are concerned about leaving the dongle plugged in all of the time. I do know that I want something more integrated than a phone mounted to the vent at some point. Knowing your oil temps is pretty crucial and I can no longer live without it lol.

Has anyone tried "ScanTool 427201 OBDLink LX Bluetooth" out? I didnt provide a link as i am unsure if i should, but a quick search on amazon should yield you the result.
It looks decent, even though it is higher priced than most out there. M |

This question was asked earlier in the thread, but don't think it was answered. Does anyone know how reliable the data is in regards to HP and torque? I have input the details of the car in hopes that it is somewhat accurate, but just want to check if anyone had confirmed. TIA

Is there a way to code the car such that the 12v socket turns off immediately or at least shorter than the default time it takes for the socket to turn off? I have a phone that I leave in the pocket in front of the cup holders constantly plugged in right now that is set to go into airplane mode and display off when no power is detected. Problem is, which the car is off but power is still on, the phone stays awake and you can see the screen on from outside the car. I want to minimize that as much as possible.

Something small like an iphone 4s will fit in a lot of spots... I personally only "need" temperature functions on a regular basis so...... |

Yea just an idea.....I grabbed a clean HTC Vivid off of e-bay to play around, it is pretty small and thinking about that Belkin cup holder mount and not really block any of the controls or vents. I wanted to use reliable bluetooth connection instead of wifi and my iPhone 7+

OBDLink MX Wi-Fi because it allowed me to use Wireless with iphone because of built in WPA2 with AES encryption Personally I feel its a better/more secure option than bluetooth...ymmv I was also looking at the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" which isnt THAT much bigger than an iPhone 6/7 The Tab A 7 is 7.36 x 4.28 x 0.34 in The iPhone 6 is 5.44 inx 2.64 in x 0.27 in For ~100 bucks it might be worth the experiment |
