Also, if BMW does go this direction, what are they going to call the little roadster that we know they're going to make? Will it be the Q series? R series? Choose your own letter series? I mean, if this is the way it shakes out that's good news, but it seems weird in terms of naming conventions, which would look something like this: E82 Coupe (1 series) becomes F22 Coupe (brand new 2 series) becomes Z something? Just seems like too much work. I get that BMW is trying to move the aforementioned minivan to a more upscale price bracket, but it flies in the face of the new 1,3,5,7 vs. 2,4,6 naming conventions. You can't tell me that they couldn't have charged 40k for this thing in the US and still made it a 1er - go down to your local Dodge or Ford dealers and take a look at the minivans. They're regularly in the 40+k range. That way you keep FWD in the 1er lineup and no where else. My 135 coupe (entry level BMW mind you) was 45k in 2010....so what's the point of all this? It seems haphazard and not very well thought out at all. I also think it would be dumb that the only small, sporty coupe that you could get with BMW would come from a mid-engined Z moniker - not really what the company was built upon, right?

Erm, what does RWD have to do with anything?
It just makes no effing sense to give the F22 coupe 228 single sided exhaust pipes and to give the minivan, also with a 228, dual exhaust pipes. Perhaps BMW is trying hard to make the minivan look more sporty - like maybe no one will wonder where the wood finish is on the option list for the outside of the car if it has dual exhaust pipes. You dig?

As a result, it should not come as a surprise when most Americans consider this vehicle to be outside the normal parameters with which we are accustomed. They can't have it both ways.

No, only the car developed in collaboration with Toyota - which can end up being a member of Z-series. Something more like eg. more affordable Porsche Cayman. BMW car will be more performance oriented while Toyota / Prius car will focus more on efficiency.

2er Coupe will stay there - yet Mk2 being put on FWD platform, and performance models (M235i) being offered with AWD only. Featuring exactly the same layout & body design as F22. Being a 3-box design, front-engined. 4(+1 later) seater. While the car developed in collaboration with Toyota will be more of a sports car. Think of it as of mini i8 - yet with more conventional design styling & materials used. Mind the car is still under consideration and still not greenlighted as it is - but they are heading into that direction. Still quite a few years away. |

I think the majority of friends here compare apples with oranges... I simply compare this line with a B class...I see A LOT of B classes in the street with ladies/moms being the primary driver...I can see this car (although not my taste) eat B-class for breakfast all day long! this will be a high selling car in Europe and potentially North America (US & Canada)...mark my words... |

The 228i is the smaller engine available in the body, so dual outlets are reserved for the 235i. The 225iAT (not sure why you are calling the AT a 228i) is the larger engine available in the AT body, so it gets dual outputs. Simple and completely logical.

Blasphemy ! Perhaps people wouldn't want a mini i8 ! Just my opinion, but I think that's a dumb move.

Like my N54/N55 135 has single sided pipes, but the 3er has always had dual exhaust pipes with that engine. How is that logical? Now that the M235 AND 228 have dual exhaust pipes??? I thought the minivan had 228 on the back - so my bad for missing that, and thanks for the post. Still not logical to me.

My overall point is that there are so many things going on with the models and naming conventions that many of the new changes don't seem to jive.

TBH I don't get a lot of BMW decisions either E.g I don't get why the 335i gets twin exhaust while more powerful 335d gets the dual left handed pipes... Unless there's another model in the pipeline. IMHO something changed between the concept and the production 2AT that shifted it from elegant to a little 'meh' with stretched back eyelids. Just hope the regular 2 stays RWD. Well the more they sell the more profit the more the chance of a halo car - it's a bit of a logical fallacy but I hope that's the case. |

Couldn't help but notice that it inherited the Hofmeister kink. While a signature design of BMW, so is RWD & the two are mutually inclusive.

Putting this quote (a la BMW) in a time capsule before the definition of Hofmeister kink changes.
