Lets face it the m2 isnt gonna be cheap, I doubt the couple o fbucks the 4banger is gonna save us isnt why were buying the car.
It should have the N54 tuned to about 350hp and itll be a good seller. |

I also prefer the I6 but it would depend on weight and throttle response. I love quick throttle response and if they made a very light M2, that would be the best for me. I have driven the new F30 4 cylinder and the throttle response is impressive. It doesn't sound good but most of the turbo motors don't sound as good as the NA motors anyway.

I would buy both, I4 or I6, however due to emission standards, fuel economy, downsizing and other regulations, i think it will be a lightweight/I4 combo.
The legendary E30 M3 was 4cyl, lightweight, superb handeling, it offered specially engineered parts like gearbox, chassis, suspension, diff etc... E30 6 cylinder models where available at the same time... M2 like all other M/// cars should offer a package with specially engineerd M parts like lightweight bodyparts, (carbon roof), bigger (better) brakes, suspension, chassis, wider track, wheels, exhaust, interior/exterior details (seats, wider flares, fenders...). So one can sepperate a true M/// car from the other "normal car" perhaps upgraded with performance package like M235i. For the matter of the 4cyl, let's take a quick look at the 328i engine. Simply adding the hartge software brings it up to almost 300hp... Imagine the bmw engineers giving it the "alpina-treatment", upgrading the cranckshaft, pistons, inlet manifold, exhaust system, extra (better) oilcooling, extra watercooling, sparkplugs, cam's, mapping, using magnesium/aluminium alloy cast for enginebody, higher redline I'm guessing it could easilly put out 300 plus horsepower. For the matter of sound of 4cyl. WRC cars (turbocharged) today make a great sound... Personnally E30 M3, 2.5l with carbon airbox, OMG what a sound! When in front of the car, only induction noise. Good times! When in back, only exhaust... Sure, there is nothing like a N/A I6 like the s54, but as previously mentionned, due to emmissions etc, we've probabbly seen the last N/A engine in the E90/92 M3. It 's truly sad, but i'm guessing we will never see N/A engine in a BMW road car in the future again. I'm changing cars in a couple of years (2), but before i decide, i'm looking at the new M3/M4, M235i, and of course M2. Waithing on the reviews of the journo's befor i buy one of these cars. I would consider the alpina B3 biturbo aswell or M135i. (sorry for my bad english, i'm dutch/French speaking belgian) Last edited by jb001; 05-02-2013 at 09:50 AM.. |

I would love an I6 motor, but if they can build a Turbo I4 motor that redlines about 8k and pulls hard to the redline I'd take that. Wishful thinking.....

500hp V8 to compete with Jaguar F-Type S V8
Turbo Four or NA I6 would be nice.

Turbo I4
I'd really love to see a turbo i-4, but would consider the I-6 Either way, I believe this car will be great regardless of powerplant. Two years seems like an eternity.

It can be done by focusing on lightweight tech. Look at Porsche pushing 400hp in 991S, getting 27 mpg on highway. Even Nissan is getting 26mpg with the 370Z. A lightweight M2 with a normally aspirated 6cyclinder is more than do-able. |

It would be nice to hear from Scott26. I would be very curious on whether the results of this poll differ from BMW's own market research.
If anything, I would think the larger buying population that do not troll these forums and may not be aware of this car until they see it in the showroom would be more inclined towards a 6 cylinder (for badge whoring reasons) than the enthusiast community represented on this forum |

decision won't be made based on " market research" but more likely due to things like CAFE regulations.. |

what.. you mean like they did in the 80s with the 4 cyl S14 in the E30 M3 and the 6 cyl M20 in the 325is? yeah.. NO WAY they would EVER do that.. ! Quote:
some of you alleged BMW fans need a HISTORY lesson or two.... because apparently you have become INLINE 6 fans and not fans of Bayerische Motoren Werke.... Emphasis on the MOTOREN. Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 05-02-2013 at 12:23 PM.. |

I'll be honest I didn't read this thread. I don't care if it's a high strung NA 4 or a tti6 or whatever (ideally they put an e90 m3 na v8 in there) as long as it's port injection. Direct injection is no fun.

If we get an I4 in the M2, it will be turbocharged to some ridiculous level. I bought a 135i instead of an Evo or STi primarily because of the difference in character. The N54/N55 is much more linear in its power delivery. The S14 was well regarded for its linear delivery as well. In contrast, a 2.0L I4 turbocharged to 300 HP is always going to struggle in the low RPM range unless you fit some exotic solution like a variable geometry turbo or some sort of hybrid-electric gizmo. It's a matter of physics. With the M235i having a turbo I6, I just can't see BMW putting an I4 in the M2. There's just too much risk to perception from buyers.

Loving the irony of the fact that if most people are offered an E30 here they would love it and praise the bejesus out of how original it true BMW it is. And yet ... faced with a new small BMW with I4 they get all up in arms and say NOOOO it must be I6 or I am buying an Audi lalallalalala.
