Anyone have any clue how create a user defined PID? OBD fusion tech support says that they do not support oil temp on the 14' M235i, but one can create a user defined PID to extract this information from the ECU.

There is a standard oil temp PID, and it doesn't work for many many vehicle models, but it sounds like it does work for the M235i if folks are getting it to work with Torque on Android. I'm also curious if anyone has seen it also working on the 'Timer Display' in Harry's.

Harry's will alert you if you reach a "warning" level and then an "error" level. Harry has set the temps to predefined values as follows: Oil Warning - 238 degrees Fahrenheit (Orange) Oil Error - 302 degrees Fahrenheit (Red) Coolant Warning - 221 degrees Fahrenheit (Orange) Coolant Error - 239 degrees Fahrenheit (Red) Harry mentioned that he consulted some knowledgeable folks when setting these values and they seem to be on-par with my research. If I see orange on the display I might do a cool down lap, if I see red, I better pit at the next opportunity.

Here's an example from another vehicle where coolant temp is displayed but oil temp is not functioning:
Here's another example with both working and an oil temperature warning indicated: (Apologies for large pics)

I do not get any oil temp information in either HLT or OBD Link. It would be helpful to be able to modify the settings for warnings. My car's normal coolant temp is in HLT's warning range.

And Torque is showing oil temp on my 4/7/15 build M235xi.

Also, it would be really nice if Harry would allow those temps to be user configurable, I've suggested this to him in the past, please create an account and ask Harry for this feature to show there is a need out there: Harry's Laptimer Forum - re Warning Temperatures

Hey Folks, exciting news today for iOS users. Automatic has come out with a new generation of it's OBD adapter, which has tons of new features, not the least of which is it allows a second app (besides their own Automatic app) to access the dongle via Bluetooth. This instantly makes this the best iOS compatible bluetooth OBD reader, and unlike a lot of the cheap Chinese grey label ones we've had to use previously, this one should be top notch quality and come with real product support through Automatic, and all that that entails. Very exciting. They've already announced compatibility with DashCommand, Harry's LapTimer, and OBD Fusion, which is all I need, that's for sure. Yes, it's a little more pricey at $99, but if it works like it should, it'll be well worth it.
Here is a link to the release info: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/05/19/...w-car-adapter/ And it's also available from Amazon (if you are a Primer member like me, you always prefer to order everything from Amazon): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...3DT4IOE573ACGP I will be ordering one shortly, and will share my experiences here. I expect many aspects to be improved over my current Elm Wifi OBD set-up, most importantly, it should auto-connect seamlessly (since it's bluetooth now, vs wifi), and I'm hoping that it doesn't draw power when the car is off. Fingers crossed.

Likely a change in the ECU going from BMW specific PIDs to industry standard. If I had to bet, I'd bet there's a hard cut date when the ability to read it came on.

Yeah, me either, that's why I literally didn't even mention it. FYI, Harry has already updated his apps to specifically support the new dongle.

With the MX WiFi, my iPhone automatically joins the OBD interface's wireless network, just like my iPhone automatically joins any other known wireless network. Not sure why Bluetooth is any better in this regard. :

Thx.
I'll be seeing my buddy on Friday. he's a mechanic so we'll see if we can get a reading from the ECU and determine if there is a custom PID.

Low-power Bluetooth is expressly made for this kind of data connection, so it should have less problems and certainly less obstacles. Lower-power consumption, no interference with internet connections, and a nice pure data connection (and not a network protocol connection) is probably going to be a clear winner. That's why I'm excited we finally get a solid solution supported by both Apple and the 3rd parties we were already using--at last!

OBDLink MX Bluetooth Scan Tool
Just ordered (6/15/15) OBDLink MX Bluetooth Scan Tool. Decided to use the Android tablet I have instead of using my iPhone. I'll post some details after I get it and set it up.
Monoblock, fantastic post, this site rocks and great thread. Thanks Monoblock and all who took time to give their input! |

I bought this mini OBD2 Wi-Fi adapter (IKKEGOL 10308BOR Vgate iCar 2 Mini OBD2 Wi-Fi) from amazon to use with an iPod Touch 5th generation:
http://www.amazon.com/IKKEGOL-10308B...HSFE60Y1YZ4HXW I paired this adapter with the Dash Command iOS app ($10) and have been using it for a week or so. Pros and Cons of the OBD2 adapter and the Dash Command app: Pros:
Cons:
The main reason I bought the adapter and app were because of the lack of coolant and oil temp gauges in the car. Mission accomplished as you can see in the iPod Touch screenshot. I am still learning how to use Dash Command, as you can also see in the screenshot. The coolant temp gauge was already part of the default gauge screen. I think there were 6 gauges on the screen, but not the oil temp, so I removed all the others except the coolant temp gauge, resized it, and then added the oil temp gauge. I will make both gauges the same size, and possibly add the color markings on the dial for green and red, once I figure out how to do it... The good news is that there is a dedicated forum where the developers answer questions directly. I definitely am pleased with this purchase. All that's left is to decide what type of mount I want to use - for now I just stand the iPod up in the cup holder and it's actually fine there.
