If the M235i is quicker around a track than the 1M (source), is there any reason why BMW would rush or consider a M2? If M235i will be quicker than the 1M, in my eyes it's already a successor to the 1M without the badge. Maybe someone can remember, but I don't recall any next gen car besting the a M car from the previous generation. IIRC, the E92 335i was 4 seconds slower than the E46 M3 around the Nurburgring.
The way I see this is for those waiting for a M2, this news is a bummer but if you're looking for a performer similar to the 1M, the M235i works at a lower price tag and no limited-production. |

I saw nothing new or really unexpected among the specs, very small power bump and 0.1 sec. faster to 100 km/h in comparison to M135i, probably advertising figures to keep it on top of the hatch sister model.

The pricing is very encouraging because I'm looking for this to potentially be my next car. It'll be either this or an X1 or X3. I know, very different. Trying to really decide what I want/need, haha. Good thing I have plenty of time on my end to decide!

A 1M is as fast and in most cases faster than a manual E92 M3, period. And there are a lot of other areas of performance too, not only 0-60 or a Ring time. So, if this M235i is really a more performant car than both 1M and M3 which mimic each others real world data very closely, I would really, sincerely like to see that. Sure, 8 speed auto and better tires and more efficient suspension will help but it won't be really enough, I can't see that happening and am sure that independent magazine tests, comparos will agree. I posted this before: Guys, don't buy every marketing word, ask for a proper M2 to come early, wish bigger! That's how 1M happened albeit for a short period of time and at limited quantities. This passive line of thinking will lead BMW to focus on just the MPerformance cars I am afraid. BMW's reluctance to confirm an eventual M2 in production should be seen as a sign. My 2c.

If the M235 is going to be this "good" then that's why there won't be an M2 tomorrow. they're waiting to see if they need to build one...

Pricing is what I was referring to...and I haven't seen anything released in the US so those don't help me all that much. Good benchmark to start at...but nothing solid for the US market.

I had always figured that the M235i would be mid 40s to start and low 50s with a decent amount of options. hopefully if an M2 does arrive, it will have a sub-50k price point like the 1M and give people the option of the "stripper" performance car... we shall see...

Decisions, decisions... I've been daydreaming about the new M3... now I get to daydream on choosing between that and M235i! Sporty and compact versus torquey and practical. Can't wait to test drive both!
I'll just keep driving my E90 while I'm not busy dreaming. |

I do not believe BMW to be that reactionary. I certainly don't see them building an M car in response to existing market offerings from the competition. If there will ever be an M2 (yes), it has most likely already been approved and is being tested as we speak in preparation for its launch next year. These cars are planned years in advance. Design, development, testing and eventual production and approval of these models can take years! |

Given that we're starting to see the 2 series roll out (I assume once the M3/M4 reveals have taken place) what's the timeline for the production availability of these cars? More specifically, when will we see an M2? That's one BMW that I'm really looking forward to.
