I moved from Downtown Atlanta to the Mountains and my god am I glad that I have a 6MT. I hated traffic, but I had an auto loaner for a month and I wanted to shoot myself in the face. Its fun to have rollback in traffic and fuck with people, also engine braking till 20 with no brake lights is fun as shit.

I tell people that I don't know how to drive an automatic.

6MT ... was a requirement when shopping for this one. Replaced my 6 Speed Tiptronic Jetta. I'd rather drive the car, not let the car drive me ... That being said, if I commuted everyday for work in traffic I might change my tune, but luckily being a consultant my DD is usually a rental in another city.

So the more I hate automatic transmission cars, the worse standard driver I am?

I have been driving manuals since the mid 70's. Trust me at some point it will no longer be a badge of honor. The rev-matching, easy up/down with the paddles or shifter, and 405 freeway traffic make the automatic a sensible choice.

Back in the day when you had to try to rev match an automatic with your throttle while shifting manually in a corner, the automatic was absolutely crazy for enthusiast driving. With the auto in the 335 I don't feel like I am losing much over the manual. Yes, a little, but nothing like a handful of years ago.

Favorite auto trick? Shooting down the road, preselecting a lower gear with the paddles as you approach a point where you want to rocket, then rocket. The pre-downshift is smooth due to the rev-matching. Slick.

Paul

edit -QUESTION For those with the manuals. Does your engine rev-match as you go into a lower gear? Thanks.

No. That's the 370Z.

Don't our cars do this when downshifting with cruise control activated? I don't know, I never use it.

Not sure, I hardly use cruise control either. Maybe I'll try it tomorrow if I remember.

all 7 of my previous cars have been manuals, but now having a job that puts me in 2 hours of traffic a day, i went with steptronic for the 335.

NO regrets what so ever, these transmissions are so fast and smooth, it's honestly the best of both worlds. i love being able to comfortably creep in traffic, and then be perfectly consistent at the drag strip, AND downshift faster and more accurately 100% of the time at an auto cross or track event than any human hands and feet ever could.

and for regular everyday driving engine breaking is senseless wear and tear on your engine and trans, thats what brakes are for, brake pads are a bit cheaper than motors last time i checked!

absolutely love it, hope you do to!

Someday in the distant future I MIGHT consider owning a slushbox-equipped BMW if I ever need to get a hip replaced or something… Until then, I’d never consider getting such an effete transmission in a performance car.

That legacy term is somewhat inaccurate when it applies to the n54/hp19. Drive one and you will (at a minimum) look for better terminology.

I used to have an Auto TSX and I couldn't take it anymore. I loved the car but I had a thirst for manual so I traded up for a 6MT G35 Coupe and now a 6MT e92. As long as I can shift, press down on the clutch and not drive in Cali like traffic then there is no way I am going back to an Automatic. Manuals are too much fun and it keeps my attention level up when I am driving so that I am not distracted by other things.

Does a 370Z with a MT really rev-match for you when downshifting?

*edit*
I guess so..
Quote:
But it is, in fact, said manual tranny that is the 370's biggest advancement, at least on the race track. Besides offering better action - shorter, more precise throws - the 370Z offers the world's first Downshift Rev Matching system for a manual transmission. A plethora of sensors in the rear wheels and gearbox precisely matches the engine revs to the next gear down so that each downshift -no matter how quickly executed or at what speed - is absolutely smooth, all without the driver performing the traditional heal-and-toe pas de deux on the gas and brake pedals.

Goodluck on your purchase.. I have auto w/ paddles.. Had been having fun with it.. At one point i actually had a 2nd thought of why I got an auto instead of an MT since I've been used to MT on my previous cars.. The only reason actually is being able to rev while moving just to show off.. heheh loved it before...

I mean if you'll be using it as a commuter vehicle thinking about traffic and keeping your hand free, then it's best for you to have an AUTO..
Downshifting is actually pretty good.. Some people are actually using engine brakes on this AT.. heheh on the posts here...
