Definitely looks like 18", and confirms my impression it's a great mistake to use the same aggressive wheel widths / offsets with 18" as with 19" setups. I don't know why people do it; and 18" setup should imho:
- be based on 8J (front) and 9J (rear) rims, and not 8.5J and 9.5J, which are good for 19" - offset should be 40 (front) and 45 (rear); poking out like this is a very bad example of rice tuning

Why does the wheel diameter affect the width or the offset? No matter the diameter shouldn't the amount of poke be the same unless you start altering the body or suspension?

I would like to have my car dropped 15mm on H&R springs, and the OEM 18" staggered wheels (with OEM size tires) to be flush with the fenders using spacers. For summer I'd like to buy 18" wheels sized presisely so that both setups look (and drive) identically. Here is my plan; please correct me if I'm making some errroneous assumptions here:
1. With my winter OEM 18" wheels on, I replace the springs to drop the car 2. I test various spacer thicknesses until I achieve my goal - the winter tires flush with fenders (am I to expect a need to use spacers as thick as stated in the above quote?); when ready I have my winter setup done 3. Now I calculate ETs for my 7.5x18 (f) and 8x18 (r) forged wheels I want to custom-Order for summer: Front: 45-18=27 (30 for safety) Rear: 52-26= 26 (28 for safety)* *Just noticed the minimum width of BC Forged 18" wheels is 8", so if I want them staggered they must be 8" (f) and 8.5" (r). This of course will influence the above minimum ET offsets calculations by adding quarter of an inch per side, i.e. ca 6 mm - so my offsets would need to be circa 35 mm for both front and rear 4. I order e.g. BC Forged 8x18 ET35 and 8.5x18 ET35, and - using them with 225/40R18 (f) and 245(255)/35R18 (r) tires - I have now almost exactly the same stance, ride and handling as with my OEM-wheel based winter setup. Do I make any error in the above assumptions? PS. Why am I thinking of 18 and not 19" summer setup, and with the wheels and tires of exactly the same widths as my OEM staggered ones? 1. Because my BMW dealer is threatening me that with anything more aggressive, I'll lose my entire drivetrain warranty... 2. Because with lower ET values AND wheel diameter, the concave effect should be the most pronounced - am I right here? 3. Last but not least: because I want my car to look and handle the same throughout the year, and not differently in summer than in winter

I've edited my post because it seems that there is no real solution to get much more tread patch under the M235 without flaring the fenders. I don't want to change my wheels for a miniscule increase in tread width. Wheel style is a different discussion.

any chance of running 19x8.5 ET35 all around? if so, what would you recommend in tire sizes. note: i will be lowering on springs as well. |

Yeah, you can run a 19x8.5 ET35 square setup. I would recommend a 225/35/19 tire. With camber adjustments or an ET45 with a 5mm spacer, you should be able to run a 235 tire.

sounds good. thanks!! most likely going the 19x8.5 ET35 225/35/19 square setup. running a 19x9.5 ET45 seems to poke a little more and may cause issues with yearly checks we have here in HI.
