Actually, the R can be a beast (while still safe) even with an average (but willing to learn, enthusiastic) driver (unlike the M235i, which in hands of a beginner can easily become a deadly weapon). I have both, so you can trust me.

I was thinking about it but ultimately decided to go with the M235i because a.) found an amazing deal I couldn't pass up and b.) all the perks of BMW ownership ie: complimentary maintenance, loaner vehicles, more robust enthusaist community, interior quality.
The R is a wonderful machine, just too much to pay as it is brand new right now. If you can manage get one for MSRP, worth considering, but most dealers are no budging on the $2k-$5k markup. |

I do not think that the interior quality in a Golf MK6/7 GTI/R are worse than in a M235i. |

I think the interior of the new VW's is pretty good.
Of course there's a solid VW community. They get to know each other giving rides when someone breaks down. (smiles) |

I like VWs, a lot actually, but the interiors are just miles apart.

Man, what are you saying?!! I have both, and my impressions are 180 degrees opposite. Funny you would mention the turn signal lever: in my M235i it only feels solid for the initial step (3 blinks) - if I need to engage it fully, it flexes forward/backwards... Nothing like that in the R!

I have a dry sense of humor, the "robust" part of the community comment is directed at the fact that the BMW community seems to be made up of all kinds of people, whereas in my experience, the VW community less diverse in terms of owners. It's all sorority chicks and white guys with goatees... I don't think there's a huge difference in overall interior quality, just in the important places, seats, steering wheel, infotainment, door panels. The thing I couldn't get past was that it didn't feel different enough from my g/f's MkVII Golf TSI, a car she paid $23k for vs the $38k for a Golf R. I still really want to drive one though. |

I miss the steering wheel from my MK6 GTI. IMO it was much better than in my M235i. |

Good I'm not alone - and I can tell you that in my F10 (definitely much higher level of interior design and materials quality) those levers were even more flimsy - to a degree of sometimes "breaking free" off your fingers, forcing you to try switch the indicator again!

Yeah, I drove with that steering wheel for five years before my M235i. In my opinion, it's just garbage compared to the M wheel. When switching between cars, the different feeling in-hand is drastic. Feels very small and plasticy compared to the M wheel, and the leather is not supple at all. It's like a toy steering wheel. We'll just agree to disagree. Glad you are loving your R though!

The Golf R easily feels better than the S3. The steering feel especially is more communicative whereas even the "sport" mode on the S3 felt muted. After driving the Golf R, the S3 driving experience was a big disappointment, but the S3 interior and style are a notch or two above. For driver involvement and fun, I would rank the Golf R above the S3 and the M235xi, but the BMW has far more features than the Audi and Golf and was a better choice for me. For what's it worth and not to beat a dead horse but I did the PCD and the M235i RWD also drives noticeably better than the xdrive m235 I purchased. |

I switched from an m235i to an R recently. Had 25k miles on the bmw, and have since put over 1k on the R. I was debating on upgrading to an M2 after the 235i, unfortunetely it really didn't have that much more to offer (just my 2c). So I got the R for the everyday and debating on something more exotic for other occasions.
Overall, the R is a better car and a better value for money. It feels lighter, more agile, the steering is better(although the wheel isn't), doesn't completely destroy tires after 15k miles, and has way more features as standard. The inline 6 and the driving position are probably the biggest things I miss, but I'll have my fun car take care of that. |

That steering wheel is one of the main reasons that I didn't pull the trigger on either a GTI with the PP package, or the R. The R has 4 doors which is a deal breaker to me. That brushed aluminum just looks cheesy to me. For some, it may look great, but to me…….NO. Don't know about the turn signal levers, but the 2 that I test drove, didn't seem to bother me, and if it did, I'd remember.
