If BMW would only hire the interior people from MB!!! I recently went to the "other side" with a C350 and will be waiting patiently for the new C55 AMG and/or the rumoured M2 if the M235 doesn't appeal to me after a test drive (and I know it will from a "drivers" standpoint).
Sad truth though...whether 1,2 or 3 series, BMW interiors just don't cut it after having the Benz. Christ, even my M3 looked cheap inside compared to the new car, despite all of the Individual upgrades. And the upcoming C series interior photos are stunning, yet another leap forward for MB next year. The interior of my X5 was a different story. Seems that anything above the 3er get interior designers who know what they're doing. BMW needs to pay more attention to the insides of their lower-end cars. It's generally where we spend most of our time so why not posh it up a bit!!

hmm.. my observations.
M235i is 0.2 slower when compared to an AWD car with 33 more hp... M235i looks like a mini coupe 5 series (front side angle at least) M235i interior is very clean! CLA has way too much buttons.... who still dials with a number pad? CLA engine is beast..... 1 less liter and makes 33 more hp!!! CLA AWD system is lame

I understand this is a BMW forum. I LOVE BMWs. But I think you have to give credit when credit is due. The CLA45 is absolutely stunning. I love what they did with the new CLS and they passed it down to the CLA. The interior of the 1/2 and 3/4 series is boring. They have looked the same over the past few gens. The Merc is very impressive putting out that much power from a small engine. I havent driven the CLA but imo, nothing drives like a beemer. I had a 135 cab and I loved the way it drove. I drove a new 535 and X5 and I was also very impressed. I am not a fan or Mercs, never have been. But I am loving the new SL, CLS, SLK, ML, and CLA. I would take a CLS over the 6 GC hands down because it just looks better. BMW is getting boring. Same style over and over. But u cant beat the driving experience.

There is one other thing to take into consideration. The M2 will cost a ton more than that CLA45...
I appreciate all cars, not just BMW, although my past purchases might dictate otherwise. All in all, MB made an impressive little car and at a ridiculously low price point for what you are getting. This is a car that pictures don't do it justice, it's a really nice looking car in person. |

I prefer the BMW on visual appeal both inside and out. I am sure both cars drive well and make for a thrilling ride. By the way, I think BMW builds the better interiors, both in design and quality. I had a C350 before my X3 or my wife's 328i, and the interior in both BMWs feels more solid. I had a similar experience when being driven in an S-Class MB vs. 5 Series BMW.

I don't think it was convenient so much as deliberate. LOL.
The MB looks a lot sexier than any 2er or 3er does from that angle. At least to me it does and I would think most of the target audience being a lot younger than I would feel the same way. All the best.

M235i for me every time. Exactly what BMW needed in their line up!

Thought I would say that I'd rather have the M235i, but prefer the looks of the CLA. Those pics are not flattering at all though. Overall I think the CLA is a good looking car

The hand-built, sand-cast 2.0L motor in the CLA45 is currently the most powerful 2.0L, 4-cylinder production motor in the world.
It's also the most powerful 2.0L, 4-cylinder production motor EVER. And for those thinking it is "maxed out" on boost, a special "race" edition or even a "Black Series" variant are both rumored to be in the works. Carry on.

Is there going to be a M2? Why is the M235i already at 322HP.. they wouldn't give it the s55 M3/4 engine would they? so just the N55 with a 'PPK'..? |

Im certainly in need of A45 with M235 powertrain and transmission )))
Still, would place driving characteristics over the look, so BMW win

Merc using haldex based AWD system. Its VW Golf in body of A-class. There is no replacement for displacement they say. CLA engine is not as flexible as BMWs N55. For example, look at 80-120 times at 4-5-6th gears %)

M235i wins!
My friend and I are both in our 20s and I think we are in the target demographic for the 2 series, cla, a3/s3 sedan.
I'm in the market for a new car (my first new car actually, previously 2 were 3 - 4 years old when I purchased them) and my friend and I were both seriously excited about the CLA45 AMG. I also really didn't want to wait until well into next year to get a new car. Here are my thoughts: -- CLA -- Interior - CLA has great, great looking seats - CLA carbon fiber bits in interior look nice - CLA air conditioning vents are ugly - If I remember, it has a panorama roof option (I know, track guys hate that but its nice) - CLA "number pad" is busy and ugly and does not fit its younger target demographic - CLA navigation unit is a total disaster. Screen is way too small and as many have pointed out, it looks EXACTLY like a tom top glued to a regular dash Exterior - I really like that they attempted to be very aggressive in their design - The front is OK but I don't like the overhang - The side view is pretty OK - The back is totally unforgivable and is ultimately the one flaw, above all others, that I really couldn't overlook. Could never convince myself to spend that kind of money when the car looks like such a turd due to how its overall shape is culminating in that droopy, ugly back. Performance - The numbers look amazing, both power and efficiency wise. Thats a big deal. - Not sure about FWD but I'd def give it a try if I was still interested in the car -- M235i -- I won't go into as much detail but BMW basically did a consistent good to excellent job everywhere. For example: - The interior is not oh wow so stunning but it is clean and modern, makes no ugly mistakes, and has the largest and best screen of the three cars I was considering (s3 sedan included). Very good job. - Same with the exterior. It is anywhere from good to really sexy (in the wallpaper pics) and can be made even more aggressive looking with M Performance parts, etc. Again, there is no huge mistake (e.g. CLA rear) that sinks the whole ship - The performance and price are also very good....right in my sweet spot Again, BMW did a solid job all the around rather than coupling some really cool/aggressive wins with unforgivable mistakes. I work close to the MB dealership and have seen only 1 on the road so far. Hope that holds. I think M235i > S3 sedan > CLA45 AMG |
