Not doing it at that price but just out of curiosity: why is this for the M235 only and not the 228?

I think I remember reading in a different thread that the LSD is only available in one ratio, and the 228 diff is a different ratio, so would change the gearing. But maybe I made that up.

2016+ include LSD?
I'm about to order either the '16 M235i or a '17 M240i (all M2's sold out) but the LSD was a key consideration.
My 'guy' sent the attached as evidence that the LSD is now included (hence no longer on the available options list). Any comments or disputes or validation? Thx. |

"Electronic limited slip differential system uses Anti-lock brake sensors and hardware to electronically monitor wheel speed. If one of the wheels on an axle is rotating faster, computer briefly applies brakes to it, slowing the spinning wheel down and causing the wheel on the opposite end of an open differential to start spinning and gain traction. This is an opposite to the anti-lock brake application, when a locked wheel is electronically released." |

I asked my CA today, who is really into this stuff, and he said no to xDrive. He did say that it will work in the 228 as it has the same ratio as the 235.

When I ordered my 2016 M235, I was told that it has an open differential. the LSD was on the options list.

The xDrive uses a different rear differential than the RWD, with a welded ring gear instead of bolted. You can go with an LSD from Quaife or Wavetrac. Cost to put one into an xDrive ends up being about the same as the BMW LSD in the RWD. On the flip side, a Wavetrac LSD in the RWD is about a third of the price of the BMW one.

I don't believe the Electro-mechanical limited slip differential is the M Performance Limited Slip Differential for the M235i for the following three reasons: First line of evidence, Google "BMW electro mechanical LSD" and you'll find references by BMW that use this terminology to describe their standard open differential that use the brakes for the LS function. Second line of evidence, the document you link to (Reference PQ05105060) was released on 01-05-16. The port install M Performance Limited Slip Differential option was discontinued at midnight on Sunday 2-28-2016. Yes, I was up at midnight on a Sunday playing with the "Build Your Own" function when to my surprise it disappeared after reloading the web page at 12:30. Third line of evidence, when I ordered my car on Monday 2-29-2016 the SA was unable to enter the order code for the port install M Performance Limited Slip Differential. After checking with the dealership's manager and the dealership manager talking to the regional manager; the word was the Port Install M Performance Limited Slip Differential Option was discontinued. And, that the M Performance Limited Slip Differential is now only offered as a dealer installed option. And my fourth line of evidence, (yes I know I said only three) but... my brand new M Performance Limited Slip Differential arrived Wednesday and is sitting on my workbench in the garage, waiting for the arrival of the car next month. There is nary an "electro" connection on the thing. |

I ended up getting a custom rear end (different ratios, LS functionality) built, and when it was put in, there was no electronic hookup for the differential -- it is a purely mechanical unit, unlike the M2/3/4/5, etc, which have a LSD that is controlled by, among other things, the ECU.

I kind of thought it was too good to be true. I'm on the list to order an M240i but told my contact this would be a key question I need answered. Seems I already have it. Thx. Sigh. |

If you feel that paying $1400 more than a $600 part in order to warranty it is financially advantageous, go for it. I will note that you're far more likely to have warranty issues from the Dinan piggyback than a different rear differential.

For the xDrive M235, they have one that's appropriate (list $1300), but as the xDrive models use a welded ring gear, the existing unit needs to be sent to them for removal of the OEM gear and welding it onto a mount for their unit (with an additional $600 shop charge). That moved my doing the LSD from the "this summer while I'm out of town on vacation" list onto the "maybe" list, mostly due to the turnaround time sending the differential to them. There's a bunch of BMW folks using Wavetrac LSDs. CalWaterBoy in the E90 forum over at the other guys has had one in his 335i convertible for at least 4 or 5 years with no problems and swears by it.

Certainly useful in wet, snowy, or icy conditions. Keeps the back end planted, will prevent traction control from kicking in if you're doing something like coming out of a parking lot and doing a 90 degree left turn across traffic and so on.
Normal driving on dry roads? Not much advantage, if any.
