I see all these cars with double clutch auto, tow hooks and decals that never see a racetrack. I prefer manual but race car means car for racing and this car qualifies. |

In regard to the transmission ,technology has changed a lot in the past 50 years of automated transmissions. From all that I have heard this ZF 8 speed transmission is very effective and shifts quickly and precisely. From what I have read in order to keep costs down BMW decided to go with this transmission over a manual because going with a manual would have required an entire different computer and programing to be developed. With the ZF they only required some minor programing tweaks. The reality is we will see more and more automated transmissions and manufactures are doing more and more to make them better than a manual in terms of performance. The new C7 Z06 automatic is supposed to be quicker at shifting than the amazing Porsche PDK and supposed to be more drivable than DCT transmissions in normal conditions. Formula One, the pinnacle of racing dumped manual transmissions many years ago because they are simply not as fast and tunable as a computer. Thanks for reading my rant

DCT is much heavier, and more expensive to maintain.
Besides, the ZF 8-speed is really good. When Chris Harris drove the M135i BMW with the ZF 8-speed, he thought he was actually driving with a DCT equipped car. That's how fast/smooth it shifts. |

Can you hear those downshift sounds in the first video at 1:05 and up ? They sound really cool and I like them, but I am afraid it's just the sound of rapidly downshifting 1 gear at a time...this car does not downshift multiple gears at a time...it's a bit lame and time wasting for an 8-gear box, I'm afraid.
However, great job on BMW for straightening up the design of the 1/2 series. Now the car looks quite good. Last edited by kevinlevrone; 02-23-2014 at 04:20 AM.. |

Also comments about turbo lag make me laugh... this isn't 1981 anymore lag is a thing of the past. I've had DSMs with GT40s and you know what? Boost is always downshift away. I drive a 27 year old turbo Maserati and I'll say this, the turbos sound anything but lifeless and lag is zero. I've not driven an N54 with lag or an N55 for that matter. |

I understood the zf8hp could support multiple downshifts, 8-2nd etc so it may be the mode the driver has it in or the speed at which he is changing. You should be able to blip it down 4 gears at a time etc iirc |
