What in this announcement makes any of you think BMW is going to discontinue producing 3ers in Germany? Please be specific about what you read that gives you that impression.
Spoiler alert - it's a virtual certainty that BMW will NEVER stop producing the 3er in Germany. Believe it or not the 3er is a pretty popular car in Europe.

Mexico will be one other Satellite site similar to Brazil,India or China on which BMW will produce the 3er.
Germany will continue to be the home of the 3er.

My South-Africa built F30 328i was very solid with no quality issue. I understand people's reservation because I, too, think of VW's quality problems with their Beetle and Golf. However, BMW is not VW, and I am willing to give BMW quality-control a chance...

Because there's no way BMW sells US customers a 3er built in Germany when the plant is in Mexico. And by the way, notice that neither Scott nor Jason have contradicted this.

Notice Scott stated it is a Satellite plant....like SA...so overflow production more than likely....or to sell the cars as a lower price down in the southern hemisphere....tariffs are terrible down there...

I figured this was coming as soon as Mercedes announced they were building the W205 in Alabama for US consumption and when BMW announced that Rosslyn will be building X3s. Most likely, the plant will serve as the only source for 3ers for North America and maybe many Latin American countries minus Brazil since they have their own BMW plant. Like Mercedes does with the W205, all North American cars are built domestically and the Bremen plant only builds cars for Europe. Munich will be the same for Europe.
Only difference between Merc and BMW is that I'm sure as Scott has stated that the M3 will be built in Germany unlike the US C63, which is also built in Alabama. I get that people want a German built car but to be honest if you really think a tall blond named Hans is screwing your car together then you have another thing coming. I have toured the Mercedes and Porsche plants and over half of their workers are foreigners rather if they were born in Germany or not who knows. The point is that quality is dependent on the design and engineering of the car not on the one guy who screws in a bolt in your center console. Mexico has a presence from every major manufacturing company in the world including Ford, GM, FCA, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, VW, Audi, and Nissan. Obviously there is enough skilled labor... Side note, the only Mexican made car I have owned is a MK VII Golf and that thing is solid with no rattles or issues.

The product quality and labor skill at the two current Toluca Mexico lines is extremely high. It is the only facility outside of Germany permitted to handle BMW Security Vehicles including Diplomatic High Level and Head of State vehicles which must be absolutely perfect.

Did I miss something? Did it read that M cars are going to be made in Mexico? To answer your question I'd bet everything on the fact they wouldn't offer an ED for a car made in Mexico.

Like everything else I have experience where once it was made, designed and built in its country of origin only to be eventually be sent over seas or to a 3rd world country to be built the quality will simply drop.
I wouldn't buy a BMW made in Mexico any more then a Porsche made in Vietnam or Ferrar made in China. This comes from years and years of experience and being burned. I've experienced drops in quality from industry's across the board in everything from BBQs to high end audio equipment. It's not a fluke that Germans built a reputation of being great engineers and making great cars. There is a level of passion, pride and lineage which can't be autsourced. Further, I have personally held positions which have given me direct experience with moving high quality "made in the USA" product to China, and while the company marketed and put the usual spin on "its in our factories, or built to our spec" etc the quality control dropped segnificantly. Profits up, but quality down. I'd never ever buy a BMW built anywhere besides Germany. It's simply worth less to me. Id also still like to support that idea that each country can and has a history of being able to provide unique offerings based on the love, enthusiasm and uniqueness of its people. Be it Itallian clothing, France wine, German engineering or Swiss watches etc. I personally think it's healthy to promote and has much more value then Small increases in profits. Diluting the notion that each country is unique and going down the path of "everyone is the same or equal" is rather sad to me. People are unique like whole countries are, and as a result it stands to reason some countries will generally excell at certain things over others. I'll always put my money where my mouth and pay the premium to support that. When in Germany I was reminded yet again that Canadians and Americans don't know a thing about making a good fresh beer.
