well the problem is there wasn't demand for the Z4 M, I believe they sold 2,000 M Coupe/convertibles during production (2006-2008 model years), that is pretty low! US only, not sure on world wide however, I used to own a 2006 Z4 M Coupe and its still one of my favorite all time cars, I had to sell it when my first kid was born (needed two cars with car seats) and I still miss it, hoping to buy one in a few years as a summer fun car. of course I will probably have to pay about the same as what I sold mine for 5 years ago! Last stick I owned |

no big loss.
the new 2 series is already a 3500+lb fat pig of a car....the last thing we need is a 3600 lb 'entry level' sedan. The Audi A3 is 3000 lbs....ouch. good call, BMW. |

Every car is a "fat pig" when it is stuffed with optional equipment. Basic M235i is no heavier than equivalent 135i Coupe despite being a bit larger. I too wish that basic M235i is sold in North America but BMW has obviously positioned the car differently.

The only problem I have with this is that BMW makes models that are absolutely pointless. Out of every model so far, BMW is going to say they don't want to make a 2 GC because people won't buy it? I'm sorry but they should have used that logic a long time ago...

How long have people been clamoring for an E46-sized sedan for crying out loud? We've been talking about the damn 2GC for nearly three years on these forums, and there has been zero movement on it so far. This car is a no-brainer -- Audi and MB clearly see the need for it, and have delivered product to market. This risk averseness is going to choke BMW into utter mediocrity.

Not yet, but Scott has alluded to their development.

I fully agree that the new 3-Series is just too big. Test drove one in the fall and it felt more akin to a Cadillac CTS than a BMW. love my 128i and would love the next car to be a M235 Gran Coupe... I often have one passenger in the back, and it isn't all that easy for the tall ones.
Although the wife would like a 5-Series touring someday. Just try to get that over here. Her Volvo Wagon is 8 years old, and we'll probably drive it till it dies or until BMW offers a 535 or 550 Touring. And I don't mean GT. |

It will still be faster than the 135is as well. And, to the majority of the world, much better looking. Kind of like a hot chick with a fat ass. Who wouldn't want a ride with that? Now the E82 that you have and I am saying goodbye to...well from the front, it looks like a special person that was surprised with a bright light. Just sayin...

So BMW is afraid of bringing something in below the three series because it would undercut 3 series sales?
Maybe if the three series actually stayed E90 size or smaller, then the 4 series coupe and gran coupe (built to be longer than the 3) would have made sense in filling the gap between the 3 and 5. Not only that, it would have actually made sense numbering instead of the scramble of numbers it now is. |

So let me get this straight, according to this guy it's a waste of money time and they don't want people switching from the 3 series into a smaller sedan. However, they think it's logical to make two 3 series sedan (3 series sedan and 4 series GC), 3 series gran turisimo and 5 series gran turisimo (which personally i think theyre ugly but thats just me) an X1 X3 X5 and X6 and working on an X4. WTF bmw?

if people are really that concerned about the weight then read this and quit bitching
http://www.zeperfs.com/en/fiche4745-bmw-m235-i.htm the verified weight is the same as a 135is 6 speed optioned out lightly. There is nothing to complain about the weight will help those of use who will be doing winter driving as well as the fact the the car is fast sporty and seems to do fairly well on a track, this isn't a DTM race or track car, if you want a pop can go buy a Honda or something

BMW can not afford to pass on the 2GC opportunity. They will not take the competition from the CLA and A3 laying down. I believe the original quoted text may have been taken out of context or possibly an outdated interview? Or he is saying they will make it, just maybe not bring it to the US market?
I do agree on the substitution theory. The 2GC has the potential to cannibalize the 3 series sales (BMWs best selling car by far). |

320i exists for a reason. I think it is a way better alternative to CLA or Audi A3. But, I agree a 4 door 1/2 series in rwd form would be a really nice addition.
