Again, I have no interest in disparaging C&D, the new M235i, or the old E92 M3....but when it comes to performance metrics, I never cite C&D as my realistic gauge of performance figures. I'm a big fan of their writing and photography though! |

As the owner of a mere US spec E36M (1997 332i), it's kind of nice not having a "Real" M car. The replacement parts are much more affordable, and you can toss your car around the track with much more abandon since you're risking fewer dollars.
The numbers on the M235 look good. There's plenty of performance for my schlog to and from work. the only time I might have HP envy of an M car is on the long straight of some tracks. Unfortunately, my track days are fewer and further in between, so I'll be happy lapping in whatever. I STILL NEED 4 DOORS...Just in case BMW NA is listening. |

Don't want to be a wet blanket, do remember numbers don't mean everything

Try pricing a 3/4 series with all the same standard options on the 235 and you'll only get a 3/428 (not saying 2 is better than the 3/4) I got 3% off msrp then another $1000 incentive and if y'r a CCA member you get another $1000 off...so my car with Prem pkg, heated pkg, CF spoiler was $44k OTD before taxes...you see?

I'm still waiting for a few folks to push their cars hard to see if this version can take the big boy track days without overheating, limping, or flat out breaking.

Metallic paint and a premium package(all the options I, personally, could ever want or need) bring it to $46,875. In relative terms that seems fairly reasonable. Add 2-3k for xDrive? And with a little patience an M235i can be had however you want it. Mostly. I think the N54 and N55's torque delivery is what is responsible for their ever impressive acceleration numbers, again in relative terms. C&D is just the control in this experiment. It being .4 slower than the E92 M3 and .4 faster than the the 135i is completely acceptable to me. People are really gonna shit when C&D measures the 228i at ~4.7/8. What a blessed time for automobiles we live in.

100% of the old M3's performance (more like 85%, but who's counting), 2/3rds the price, 150% of the sex appeal of the F8X. WTB F80 M3 with M235i bumper and headlights.

Very nice numbers. I have to admit I'm not surprised it broke 12's with the ZF.
Not to compare apples to oranges but in the early 2000's camaro ss with 320hp and around 3400lbs ran 12.9-13.0 all day. So yeah I'm on board with the M235i! Can't wait for the M2.

I'm more anxious on the M2 now than the F8x M3/M4. As a simple tuned N55 T0, i'm also willing to bet better gas mileage than it's bigger brother with at least 95% of it's performance out of the box.

The proof of just how great this transmission is may very well be confirmed by Chevrolet. They are developing this transmission for the Z06 spec C7 vette, claiming it will perform on par with Porsche's PDK, which is one of the best dct available. If it can hold up to the 625/625+ power over time (which will surely be a 3s/11s or better performer), the industry may very well ask if the much more expensive to manufacture dct is even necessary.
