Simple fact is.. most people on this board (bimmerpost in general) don't even know that BMW has made 4 cyl motors.. |

It's more about how they can make a 350hp turbo 4 better than a 350hp N55, and justify the price difference between a M2 4 cylinders, and an M235i 6 cylinders. They'd have to go crazy on lightweight material. |

the same way they justified a 4 cylinder in the E30 M3 vs the E30 325 which had a 6 cylinder motor.. one was a great sports coupe... the other an oustanding sports car.. and yes.. a carbon roof, less sound deadening, lighter aluminum suspension parts would likely be the best ways to save weight along with some additional aero parts, better brakes (ala the 6 piston non M calipers on 128/135 vs M3 calipers on 1M) for better performance. Car sales is mostly about specs and marketing. To make the car sell successfully, it needs more cylinders and more horsepower. A four cylinder engine will fail the marketing test, so we shouldn't take any notice of people who talk about that, IMO.

If the car is built around marketing rather than purpose/function, I have no interest in ///M(arketing)2, I want a real ///M(otorsport)2, in the same vein as Toyota GT86.

Yes if you want a lightweight four cylinder, Toyota have already done it for a good price. Please buy one. BMW will differentiate themselves with the horsepower figure that buyers expect on a M branded car. BMW know the game as well as anyone else. It is just misleading people to talk about a 4 cylinder M division car in current times.

I think he is likely to be deliberately misleading the market and his competitors. Although what he actually said is that it wont happen in the very near future.
Mercedes have released the AMG A45 with a transverse mounted 4 cylinder. It will be interesting to see how much recognition that achieves. Even if it proves to be a hit, BMW's situation is different because the M235i already has a six cylinder. The M2 needs an engine that is bigger and better than that. The performance car market hasn't changed that much, despite what environmentalists may think. |
