Most bike track rats just drive around the parking lot slowly to warm things up if the bike has cooled off between sessions. I'd still think that a slow drive with low revs would be the best way to warm things up, including the transmission, tires and brakes.
The only time I've really ever heard a valid reason to idle a gas motor was back in the days before computer controlled coolant pumps, turbo charged cars benefited from a cool down (that was still better done by non aggressive driving), but since nearly all cars continue to circulate coolant now long after you turn the motor off, this is much less of an issue. B5 Audi S4's were known to burn to the ground when drivers got off the Autobahn and parked quickly, without letting the turbos cool down. |

Lets say you have to drive the car bak home 1200 miles on the freeway. What's the best way to do it to follow the recommended procedure?
Driving in 3rd 4th ... 8th between 50 and 70 mph switching gears every 15 mins or so to vary the rpms? |

usual I wait till it kicks down the idle..and then go..so that's about a minute..as for oil change I totally agree with six months and oil change..don't wait for that BMW one year service..maybe they do call you in sooner then a year even if your one of those don't drive a lot...can you imagine..just parking this and take it out only for a weekend spin....heavens no

I was told the free maintenance plan only covers stuff under bmw recommended intervals ie first oil change is recommended at 10,000 miles. So if someone wanted to go in at 1,200 miles after break-in, it would be outta your pocket. But I'm gonna try to see if they'll cover it once I go past 1,200 b/c that's dumb that they advertise free maintenance and won't let you do it when you want. Anyone else heard different from their dealership? |

Break-in period does not exist on the M235i according to the key-read I did at the dealership.

My dealer told me yesterday that it's not suppose to go into sport or sport+ mode for the first 600 miles, also to keep the RPMs below 5k for the first 600 miles as well. Anyone else heard this?

Seems like everything I have bought lately is a short term lease. My phones and my cars included. I used to be so protective with all my purchased items, covers, special protective treatments, etc. Now I'm like, I will keep it clean and shinny but not sweat the little stuff since it will be replaced soon. Probably wrong, but given how easy and affordable it is these days I just don't put as much work and effort into the ownership any longer. |

The car will be fine just let it warm up, the suspension and brakes need more breaking in than the motor does. Get on it after it's warmed up and have fun.

I took my car in for 1200-mile service only to be told nothing needs to be done. They said it requires the baby-driving period, but once you hit 1200 you're good to go.

From the actual manual:

Engine and differential Always obey the official speed limit. Up to 1,200 miles/2,000 km Do not exceed the maximum engine and road speed: ▷ For gasoline engine 4,500 rpm and 100 mph/160 km/h. Avoid full load or kickdown under all circum‐ stances. From 1,200 miles/2,000 km The engine and vehicle speed can gradually be increased. |

Its interesting that BMW recommends not to do high revs and vary the rev's. Because at there factory in SC when i did a performance pickup they put each car off the line on a dino and take it to over 120mph and run it through the rev's.
but as mentioned earlier to schools. Race or BMW recommended. I did a little of both when i got my car.

I'm going to take it easy for the 2000 (already 14% done in 2 days of enjoying it). I accidentally had it kick down a couple times so I have been mostly keeping it in manual to avoid that. Pretend 4000 is redline
It all makes sense for me since it's not all that warm here and I shouldn't push the PSS's/suspension until the roads properly thaw and the frost heaves come down. |
