For example... Why would turning the knob clockwise (the same way you'd screw something in) zoom OUT on Nav, and counter-clockwise (lefty-loosy) zoom IN? I'm sure that you can get that reprogrammed for a hassle, but why isn't that standard?

Software programmers do weird things like this all the time. A control is programmed around a function that may be predefined as something like spin clockwise = move down the list, ccw = up the list and then the whole thing extends to other areas where it no longer makes functional sense... but if CW is down and down is minus, then CW now equals zoom out, and vice versa.
