However, pardon my ignorance, but why did not BMW name the Active Tourer as a 1er? Since the 2 Series is RWD (for this gen.), I thought one of the reasons for splitting the naming system was to differentiate between the FWD next-gen 1er and RWD 2er. THanks.

It's coming!!! I bet my first born!! Ironically I would prefer M front drive to M SUVs. We already hit bottom with those. I get the feeling that BMW is following not leading to their detriment. The gti and golf R Audi S3 are great cars that most of us poo poo only because fwd. Chris Harris loved the Golf R but was willing to put up with inferior suspension of 235 because it was RWD. You make 48K fwd 2 series I get gti, golf R, Audi S3, Sti etc. For half price or close to it.

Ok, we need a 2'er GC, and surely.
The next 2 series need to be RWD, it's a new generation, surely bigger than it's current offerings. It's the E30/36 sized car, 3/4 are like a 6 series these days. The 2 is becoming the most sporty offerings BMW have, and it need to have RWD, anything else is not Acceptable!

The cars on the 35up platform are too big. BMW needs to keep at least one small RWD car in the lineup on the new UKL platform. Otherwise, like pikcachu said, people here will be taking a trip to Stuttgart. Hell, the original Olympic advertising for the 2-Series shows it as taking the torch from the 2002. If the next generation 2-Series is FWD, they'll need to be another advertisement passing the torch back. Thanks for the information as always, Scott. If there's anything we can do in the enthusiast community to influence this to the RWD side, let us know. |

If I wanted a fwd car I would shop else where. I don't buy BMW's because of superior luxury or build quality/reliability. I buy BMW's because they drive best and that includes having rwd.

It will happen. enthusiasts are a drop in the ocean and current bmw board are all about profit. No passion. every other "rule" as been broken - and quote "there wont b any m suv...there wont be 4wd m models (next gen M5/6 will) etc so i dont see how fwd wont be in the mix at some point. Good thing autotrader keeps a good stock of csl's , z4 m coups and V10 monsters for us crazy's

15 years ago were you saying you don't want BMW to make an SAV because they make great sports sedans? I'm not saying I want this to be Fwd either but I would still certainly say it is possible can make a great handling FWD car. Indeed I PREFER RWD layout and handling.... just sayin' that if they do make a fwd chassis it will certainly have good driving dynamics and be a good car. It just won't be a car I would buy. |

C'mon BMW, stick to RWD! We should bombard BMW GmbH with letters and phone calls informing them of how important it is to stick with RWD.

My wife loves her X1 very much, and we find it very spacious for our needs. If somebody wants more space, than pick another vehicle, there is a limit you can do with a certain class. If X1 will be FWD goodbye, I don't want a compromised vehicle. In regards with the 2 series, keep it RWD for God's sake and offer AWD as an option, nobody needs a FWD car. I read all the time, "Sales record", "Best month" etc, How much profit they need? Why not fix the issues, improve everything to perfect these machines and make them benchmark in every class? BMW, Once you start to cheap it out, you will loose what defines you: driving experience, status, image. Keep it this way and you will be the next Volks Wagen.
