Ok, well as the scheduled oil service is saying 18,000 miles or 2 years, what I’ll probably do is leave the oil till the cars a year old, then pay for an oil service and have the second one done on schedule a year later.

Re: First oil change for M240 - I'd really like to do the first one myself, having done so on every car I've owned except one. What I'm looking for (and can't seem to find) is a decent picture of the oil filter location - my car is still being built or I'd just go pop the hood and look - and how easy it is to access. There just don't seem to be any related videos on YouTube, either. Comments, suggestions, pics or videos all appreciated.

The oil filter housing containing the replaceable cartridge is on the top of the engine on the driver’s side next to the firewall. The BMW approved oils for the B58 engine are either LL-01 FE or LL-14 FE+ rated, this appears as a BMW spec for the appropriate oils.
The edge of the filter housing is partially covered by the engine cover that can be pulled off to gain full access. Last edited by aerobod; 04-13-2018 at 11:10 PM.. Reason: Add photo |

Well I bought my 228i CPO at 4k miles. I purchased oil and filter at the dealer and did the oil change my self soon after purchasing the car. I found debris in the filter. A small white piece of plastic film and some smaller debris. The oil looked clean though, as it should have.
Yes I think it's worth doing a break in oil change. |

The car calibrates both time and mileage. If you don't drive many miles in a year, it will signal the need for an oil change, despite the low mileage. Not to worry.

This is true, but my car indicates it’s first oil service is due after 2 years or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first, I feel both of these are too long for its first oil change so I’ll fork out for one after 1 year for peace of mind.

I changed the oil in my car at 1200 miles. I don’t care what the maintenance widget says, I’m old school. I had the oil analyzed by Blackstone labs. The report said that it takes about 5000 miles for all of the engine assembly stuff (lubes, etc.) to be flushed into the oil.
The longer OCI’s in Europe could be because gasoline is ultra-low sulfur gasoline. Gasoline in the US in NOT ultra-low sulphur. Our diesel fuel is ultra-low sulphur which is why the dealer sells BMW LL04 oil. This oil should not be used in a gas engine in the US. |

If I was going to keep the car long term and drive 12K+ miles per, I'd change @ 12-1500 miles first time and then IAW manufacturer's recommendations.
However, I'm low miles driver so first oil change was 1 yr w/ less than 4K miles on the odo. I will likely trade car before factory warranty expires. |
