MY2018 post-recall update. ASD does appear to not be as intrusive (if there at all) compared to pre-update. I'll try to confirm with Bimmercode this weekend if the module is inactive.

Fake engine sound through the stereo system is in my opinion a very very very silly idea. So I turned it off. But I'm keeping the spoiler |

^I wonder if you'd still stand behind it if Tesla pumped fake engine revs into their cabins...
Back when I had my first car, I made a sportscar engine mixtape. Really the same thing when you think about it... I was ahead of my time, I know.

What's wrong with quiet? I HATE Harley's (not anti-motorcycle, just anti-obnoxiously loud) and I hate most children's toy's. Seriously, have you heard how loud most children's toys are; they are made for deaf children (or at least they are made to make your children deaf). Okay, back on topic - ASD: There's nothing like hearing that V8 roar to life when you close the door and hit the power button in the i8. Oh, wait a minute; on second thought, that's only an inline 3 behind you. And trust me, when you get out, it sounds NOTHING like that V8 you hear from within. No joke; if you ever have the opportunity to hear an i8 from the inside, I highly recommend it. It's comical! It's almost as ridiculous as the M235 is with ASD; hit a button and the car gets louder. What? How the heck does changing from comfort to sport while idling in a parking lot make the car louder? For some reason, changing modes (while idling in a parking lot) does not affect the sound I hear when standing beside the car. Perhaps it's because all of this sound is fake? Do we really need noise to make ourselves feel better about our cars (or motorcycles for that matter)? I'd rather hear the natural noises of the engine, tires squealing and the guy in some heavily mod'ed car in the other lane crying about how he was just beaten down the strip by a 100% stock 2er. I'll leave the noise to those who feel the need to overcompensate for something lacking in their lives. (Nothing personal linus, just trying to have a bit of fun)

I just disabled ASD on my M240i (using BimmerCode) and I have mixed feelings about it...
Now the car is very quiet, even at full throttle in Sport mode- and I have the M Performance Exhaust. That's great for long distance driving when I'd rather enjoy music, but it does make spirited driving less exciting (at least to me). I know it is fake sound and I don't like the idea of it much, but before long we'll all be driving electric cars. I want to enjoy the sounds of petrol-powered cars before it is too late. I wish I could turn ASD on and off from the iDrive menu, ideally on a per driving mode basis. I would keep it in Sport mode but not in Comfort mode. I suppose I could go make some additional changes to the exhaust system, but I don't necessarily want to car to be louder from the outside. I want to enjoy it myself, not "impress" or wake up the neighbourhood. I'm still on fairly noisy studded tires, I'll put the Michelin back on next week. Maybe I'll hear the exhaust better then. |

Active Sound 2018 M240 Cab
I just traded my M235i in for a 2018 M240 Cab. My 235 had a very obvious difference at all speeds going from comfort to sport. I don't think my 2018 has any active sound. I can't detect a difference going through modes, rood down or up other than I can hear the exhaust more from the rear with the roof down.

I've had a 2019 M240i for about a month now. after driving a 2015 m235i for the past 3 years, I'm convinced that active sound does not exist on the m240i. when switching from comfort to sport in the m235i it was quite noticeable, but in the m240i I don't hear any change. it is possible that it's there, but just really subtle. has anyone confirmed if active sound is still a thing on the m240i? I for one actually liked it on my m235i and kind of miss it.

Here is another thread I made on this topic - https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1528224
It was recommended to put the car in neutral, rev it to ~2k rpm, then switch from Comfort to Sport/Sport+ and back to hear the difference. I did just that, and I'm telling you guys it's not there. I have coded it on and off with Bimmercode as well and there is no perceptible difference in sound. Based on what I've been reading, I think it was the post-recall update that actually changed the default ASD values to basically non-existent. Mine was stuck at the port while the recall situation was happening, so it was updated before I took delivery. I'm okay with whatever my car is doing because it sounds just fine inside and outside... just thinking about doing a res-delete to increase the natural volume a bit without any artificial noises added in.

I can also confirm that it's either non-existant or not activated on my 18' m240. It's not a huge deal for me as I have the MPE, but I'd be slightly annoyed if I didn't have an advertised feature

The sound of the exhaust with Dinan mid-pipe, and free flow, sounds way better than the noise pumped into the cabin, and if you get it, you will want no fake noise pumped in at all. I coded the sound off, and the real exhaust/midPipe sound awesome

I was "pretty sure" that I could hear the difference between ASD off and on in my '18 M240i. The difference was certainly not as noticeable as in the 4 series I drove.
My Z4 had an actual sound pipe from the engine compartment into the cabin. (I think it had a membrane or something to keep the stink out.) That was at least actual sound. One could put a microphone under the hood, or back by the exhaust, and play the real sounds in the cabin. That would be more realistic. I suppose people can want anything they want, including fake engine noises generated by a computer and piped into the cabin. Personally, I'd think it more suitable just to drive around going "Vroom, vroom", or doing that motorboat thing with one's lips. |

BTW, I thought my M235xi sounded better - more extended burbles during gear changes.
