I own both, lol...

My wife prefers the Macan S & I much prefer the M240i x-drive.
My wife prefers SUVs & I prefer cars.

You are correct, the Macan S & the BMW M35i (which I also owned) & MB’s AMG GLC, are quasi-unicorn vehicles b/c they provide utility & fun to drive vehicles.
You could also argue the RR Sport Editions as well.

If I only had to own one vehicle, I’d pick the New Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupe. Now that is the true unicorn. It has it all. Panache, handling, performance, utility, relatively rare, unique and overall brilliant!

Realizing the Cayenne is not in the same class as the aforementioned vehicles, I’d pick the Macan GTS. Brilliant as well! Best bang for buck in this niche.

GL/cheers,
B

Have you driven a recent model Audi A4 Allroad? I'm wondering how the handling compares with the Macan? I understand there's an HP divide between the A4 and the Macan S...

^^^ No sir. I have driven an Audi S4, however. My brother owns one. Very nice!
Due to the lower COG, I’d likely pick a performance sedan/SW over an SUV. I forgot about Audi’s Allroad...

Audi is a nice car. I’m afraid to own one due to their finicky, sometimes questionable reliability. It’s an oxymoron that Audi is under VAG...

For instance, I’ve owned a 2016 VW GTI. Brilliant car for the money. My nephew has it now & it’s been a great vehicle for him.

Overall, I’m a Big P, MB, Bimmer, VW guy over Audi. Go figure, lol.
Cheers/B

Motto of the story: Don't tow with a vehicle not designed for towing. If you're going to tow, get a vehicle intended for towing and equipped with a towing package (OEM hitch with electrical connection outlets).
What does a poorly done homemade wiring job have to do with the tow worthiness of a vehicle? That's just a mistake on the owners part.

We've owned both, albeit not the current incarnation. The Macan S we got right at launch and the Allroad was a 2016. We also still have a 2016 328 Wagon. The Macan is a lot more car, but it's also more money. If you can swing it and do more highway driving the Macan is where you want to be. The Audi is a very nice car, probably the nicest wagon currently available until you get into silly money for a Panamera Turismo, RS6, AMG. I'd also look at the Volvo if performance isn't your main concern, they're really nice.

All that said if you're just looking for a second vehicle a CPO X1 35 (the old one) is a tremendous vehicle for the money with a very nice 6-cyl. Not the new Mini bullshit, the previous generation that was a proper car still.

EDIT - looks like they're older than I remembered and maybe not avail CPO anymore, but hard to find more bang for your buck than something like this one...

Started looking for a replacement for our Mazda Cx7, so far it's been a good long range cruiser for going out of state. We test drove the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (liked it a lot) and the Porsche Macan. I simply couldn't stand the steering. I had it in "sport" mode, and it felt like our M240I in Eco mode. And I REALLY wanted to like it. The Stelvio was better. Then we drove the X3 M40i. Nothing comes close to it. So in about a year and a half, BOTH sides of the garage will be BMW. And that just means I'll be anal about two cars. May have to buy a beater for work...

Just ordered a Macan S today, as our Golf R and M240i are below the 1800kg or so towing capacity that we need next summer. We looked at a raft of vehicles and ended up with a list of suitable vehicles around the CAD $80K (USD $60K) range, able to tow and store in the back the things we need to take with us, all having at least 300bhp and reasonable ride, braking and handling. They all also needed to be less than 4.8m long to fit the space available in our garage:

1. Macan S
2. Velar R-Dynamic P340
3. Evoque R-Dynamic P300
4. X3 M40i
5. F-Pace 380
6. AMG C43 Wagon
7. AMG GLC 43 (although towing capacity is only 1600kg)
8. Audi SQ5

I’ve sorted them in the order that we rated them overall, interestingly the Macan and SQ5 being on the same basic platform ended up at the top and bottom of our list.

The M240i is more fun to drive than the Macan S, but for a daily driver the only thing we’ll miss on the Golf R when the Macan replaces it is the manual transmission.

The X3 M40i is slightly faster accelerating than the Macan S, but with the options we wanted, they are both within a few $ of each other in price. On our list the only vehicles we felt that were “special”, elevating themselves above the competition were the Macan due to it’s solidity and ride/handling balance and the Velar and Evoque due to the exceptional cabins and feeling of luxury, even though the Evoque’s acceleration almost eliminated it from the competition, but things like the digital rear view mirror and massaging seats combined with the cabin feel, kept it there.

Because I need four doors, a 2" hitch for my bike racks, a rear hatch compartment to fly my drones out of, minor towing capacity and a tad of off-road ability. I think the latter would negate the Panamera (plus it doesn't appeal to me visually). Thanks!
