I've heard about the suggestion that it'll be a 4 cylinder approach to the M2 in another post.
Also about the M Performance 3 and X3 as 4 cyl diesels. Pretty sure they came from an inside source. I have my doubts that either Ms or their new underling MP range will be 4 cylinder petrols and diesels but I could be wrong. |

That's what I'm talking about! Give me a 'small' 4door, coupe-esque looks in 235 gc, M235 gc, or M2 gc FLAVOR--I'm easy. Please no inline4. I'm spoiled on the silky inline6. Finally, NO gt please--too funky looking for me.

It's still unknown if the M2 will get an I4 or I6 but I suspect that the I4 is favored for the weight advantage. Consider that the car will be positioned against the CLA45 which gets by with an I4. There will also be the RS3 sedan with its I5 possibly pushing 380hp or more, but probably with more weight to carry as well. And the car will need to sit below its M3 and M4 brothers meaning 350hp or so is as much as it will get. An M engine based on the future B48 four cylinder seems like a good bet to me. |

My question is this - is the M2 going to be manufactured in higher quantity than the 1M Coupe (which was so limited that it ended up costing as much as an M3)?

These cars will be wonderful. I like the f30- but as an earlier post stated, this will be more of the car guys car.
I know these are just renders, but I would like to see a slightly lower door sill/bigger green house. Ok, ok, I want to see a modern e46

If we look at it from a logical perspective then M2 would be a four cylinder, I am not sure whether it will be the defining choice but they have done extensive work at Garching on a four cylinder which was fitted in the bowels of an X1 and tested around BMWs private test tracks in Germany.
Again the success of the 1M is purely down to the car itself not the numbers. Sure , there was another rival that put the numbers first and at the end of the day who had the better or shall I say memorable car? Again at M the numbers are secondary , just as long as you get the perfect balance of performance and precision. An M2 cannot encroach on an M3 or M4 for that matter so there will not be a higher jump in the numbers. The benchmark for the M2? It's the 1M it done everything right and true to the passion of M it is and will be memorable. Although I understand that engineers cannot wait to get hold of the AMG A/CLA-Klasse to measure it against the 1M and of course the M135i. The lukewarm reaction to the CLA by the media has spurned BMW to enter this market by mid-2015. With mechanicals etc shared with the forthcoming Coupe a lot of the work has already been done meaning possibly an eighteen month window from development to reality. The four door Gran Coupe intends to bring M Power to a new customer base in both M235i and M2 designation , the US will also receive a 228i and European customers will be offered other four petrol and Diesel engines. XDrive will also feature along with the M235i but looking unlikely for the M2. BMW intend to see how the Audi RSQ3 performs before committing to a possible X1M which could actually make its debut in its final years like the 1M p or held over until the next generation. BMW are keen to offer a compact M SAV as customer demand is apparent especially in the US.

4-cylinder = not a 1M successor. The 1M was finely nimble, no need to downgrade the engine. shame

Also, what are the chances of box fenders making a return for the M2? |

Yup...Just the existance of the CLA alone, is the reason BMW is reacting with the 2,M2,M2GC etc. Lukewarm reception...not exactly.

The M2 GC is my dream car. Now I have to wait 2-3 more years for it .. But knowing that its confirmed makes me really happy. No other car in the market will have the compact size, 4 door utility, performance, and luxury of this car.. Add good looks, ability to serve as both daily driver and track warrior.. I'm ready to order this car sight unseen baby..
Anyone else as excited as me? |

If BMW M does deliver an I4 it will be a coveted engine along the lines of the new Mercedes M133 which you will be hearing a lot more about very soon. |

It does not mean the M2 will get an S48 instead of an S20 (if it is indeed going to get a 4 cylinder at all), but don't bet against it. It's going to be interesting to watch. I have a feeling the A3 sedan that is about to drop in NY will steal some of the thunder. BMW has the potential to compete favorably, but they did drop the ball a bit by not having a four door 1 or 2 ready sooner. |

CLA looks great but...
Quote:
I've grown to think of it as an attractive car, the CLA, but it can't be seen as a car for people who want to have comfortable backseat passengers. BMW, with the GT series is definitely catering to backseat passengers. The two products have totally different objectives, I don't see the comparison. |

This is what BMW are aiming to completely avoid with the 2er, the combination of Sporty looks , style , individuality and of course RWD . BMW would like to showcase that their arrival in this segment will be worth the wait for buyers looking for this kind of concept.
