It comes with the wheel and front carbon fiber trim. If you already have the M sport steering wheel (basically the same wheel but leather) you don't need anything else. Not sure what you need if you're not starting out with the M sport wheel.

Install labor was $125.

Bumping an old thread.

About to pull the trigger on the wheel. Has anyone found one for less than 675?

Looks great. Did you do the install? If so, I'd like to know the difficulty. Does everything just swap over from the other wheel? If not, what did it cost you to have done? Thanks..

Install takes 20 to 30mins at max! Super easy to do it yourself. (Including swapping controls)

I got me wheel from eBay seller Tainik (OEM Alcantara is used). Its under $400 USD, but takes a month to get it shipped but worth it.

Edit: I think with the OP wheel, it comes with the carbon fiber trim, whereas the one I got from eBay does not, you must swap your wheels control

Considering how well it looks on your car for such a cheap price... I think the month long wait is the least of my worries.

I was never really thinking about changing my steering wheel, but considering I can tell the leather on my wheel has VERY LIGHT fading, I might just get this soon.

(bought a used 2014 about 2 months ago with 7k miles)

Thanks for sharing. How is the quality of the stitching? Is it done by bmw or is the seller doing it themselves?

Stitching is darn good, almost OEM like. It is a re-wrap by an independent person, but uses OEM Alcantara color that BMW uses (My OEM Seats and steering wheel are exact match). He is well known in the BMW community (When I had my e36 M3, many e46 and e36 guys have purchased from him).

There is another member on here that has ordered from the same seller for his M235i and i am sure he can vouch for Tainik as well.

But like i said, wait will be long (mine took nearly 2 months :O )

There are actually two M-Performance Steering Wheels...one is the Standard version and one is the electronic version.

For reference:
Standard: https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462
Electronic: https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462

Ehh - careful we're getting our lingo confused now. The wheel shown in the picture is a 1 series anyways, so not worth going into.

There are FOUR total models of M Performance steering wheels available for the 2/3 series F2x/F3x cars.

One - is the wheel shown which is simply the standard 3 spoke Msport-style wheel trimmed with Alcantara

Two - is the same wheel but with the race display embedded in the top section (shown in the picture).

They also do the same 2 variations (alcantara, alcantara + display) for the standard base model 2 series wheel.

They make these versions so people who do not have the M-sport style wheel standard can have the alcantara without replacing their controls or airbag.

Wow...I will certainly defer to your knowledge of a level of complexity I did not realize. The display made sense. But, if an MSport wheel suddenly becomes MPerformance by substituting synthetic velour for real leather, I have probably lost the meaning of "Performance"!

That's arguably true...but most of the M Performance catalog are hopped up bits like this, the alcantara dash trim, shift knob trim, pedal covers, carbon fiber exterior bits, etc. IE - none of it actually is for performance. It's for making money on trim bits.

With the exception of things like the diff, PPK, exhaust, or brakes it's predominantly superficial.

Understood, but I guess I give some additional value to the reality of the leather vs. "alcantara", a brand name for a synthetic velour fabric which doesn't seem at all "performance"- oriented, unless it's for traction in a seat for high g cornering. For me, it's a hop down! Real leather or real CF....those would seem to add value to me. Here's a leather-trim wheel and instrument panel, which seems a higher level treatment to me.

It's all personal preference. Alcantara is the material of choice for most "Ultra sport" models since it generally has the best grip and it looks "neat".

I prefer leather myself, especially for a daily since Alcantara typically doesn't wear very well and over time is prone to absorbing oils and sweat. But it's different and it's the same stuff you'll find in a Porsche GT3 or Lamborghini, so it does add a different feel to the car.
