Hmmm...that E53 is at least 15 years old (MY2006 was the last of the E53)

Agreed, but it's only possible because the basic paradigm for BMW cars (by and large) is exactly that of every other commuter car. It's only us fanatics that notice much beyond the badges (the hips, the exhaust, the size of the tires, the stance, etc.).

If the car had a different paradigm, say that of my Lotus, the badge itself wouldn't matter. My Exige says "LOTUS" on the back of it, and has a Lotus badge on the front, yet usually the first question every normal person asks is "what is it?"

Maybe I should put an M badge on it

I want one of these so bad. Someone help me convince my wife that the 3rd garage spot is for a 3rd car and not for useless junk.

Think about the poor Mustang owners. A base Mustang and a GT350/500 owners see this all the time. Someone bolts on some parts, applies some stickers and a cobra and they have a "tribute" GT500. It happens everywhere, all the time, certainly not exclusive to BMW. Different years but red is V6 Base, Blue real deal.
