I appreciate the logic that took you to M235, especially the part about the hard work and the reward to yourself. I'm onboard (haha...another vessel pun) with that. There's a balance between saving and spending and if you work your butt off you need something to balance that, too.

Maybe I would have ordered the M235, too, if I'd read your post BEFORE ordering my car. The Estoril Blue with oyster seats in a convertible look gorgeous.

You might not admire my self-restraint if you knew where I started with this. This is primarily a commute car for me--50 miles/day and we drive the X3 on weekends. I was seriously considering something very inexpensive and practical...like along the lines of a Kia Soul, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. So I thought a VW GTI (had one years ago), then moved to a VW Beetle convertible. I took a big leap one night after getting fed up with traffic and was considering the i3 just to get into the HOV lane. The limited range made me nervous, but now I've already spend >$40K in my mind so I considered the X1, then the 228 coupe, finally landing on the 228 convertible. I more than doubled my original intended purchase price. Oops.

There were many others considered; I won't bore you with it, but you get the idea. Since I do tend to get obsessed with cars, my poor husband has been suffering with this whole thing since November.

I've come across some of the 228 v 235 posts, which brought me to the realization that (in a forum like this, with people passionate about their cars), it's like talking about politics or religion--criticism is taken SO personally and is like insulting someone's mother.

(...and no wonder there's no hope for world peace when all the BMW enthusiasts can't even get along!)

Haha, your poor husband ! Since November, huh ? I think getting an electric car so you can drive in the HOV lane is a wicked smart idea !!! I used to commute in the bay area, so I totally understand how much time and hassle that can save you !

Yeah, pure electrics still don't offer enough of a range to be practical. I'm surprised anyone buys them at all. Hybrids, on the other hand, are practical coz the gas engine extends the range quite a bit.

In any case, good final choice Well, maybe now, you guys will switch from the X3 to the 228i on weekends !

Some people here and on YouTube do tend to be super sensitive to other people's opinions. When they freak out, I try to calm them down by pointing out that I'm just giving my opinion ... no need to take anything personally ! If that doesn't work, I've found another tactic to be effective -

YouTube wars, especially, can be SO entertaining. They start off with opinions of cars, then get to each others' psychopathology, mothers and fathers, sexual orientation, religion, race. 50 comments later, they still manage to find ways to put each other down.

That convertible thread was a freakin joke !!! People are still giving me shit about my post. I just stopped replying. I've got better things to do with my time

True that about world peace ! God, it's shocking to see how infinitesimal a reason people need to dislike each other and start a conflict ! And, very sad. People can find a million reasons to hate each other, but ask them to find reasons or ways to like each other, and that tends to be a struggle. Truly sad and disheartening.

BTW, in that YouTube video I posted a link to, I saw a bunch of Hyundais being offloaded from the ship. You asked earlier which brands come in to San Diego, so that's one of them I guess.

My newest toy to keep me busy till I get my M235i - a camera mount. I was debating buying a new dash cam vs using my high end $400 Sony DSLR-ish camera and buying a tripod car mount for it.

Went with the camera mount ... it's a dual suction cup mount, rated pretty high on Amazon.

Ok, the Long Beach cam does not offer still shots, like the Panama canal cams did; it streams Flash video, which cannot be captured as a simple file resource (e.g. JPG file), so I had to write a new Java program to capture screenshots of my PC at regular intervals (configurable). I then need to keep the Long Beach cam in my browser open and in focus, and the program will then capture screenshots at regular intervals.

I'm gonna kick start the program and go to bed. I can't stay up till 5 am tonight

Hopefully, I'll have something for y'all when I wake up in the morning Let's hope the Long Beach cam is worth something.
