Just one example: M Division Chief himself said in an interview, replying a question, which has its own thread here (please search) that M235i is NOT next generation 1M, neither was M135i, it will be a M2 if and when it takes a green light for production. I mean, seriously, every single sentence up there, just reverse it upside down! And unfortunately it seems to me that this is exactly the target client profile BMW is relying on with M Performance models

In regards to it being a real M or not.
Having been interested in this model for about a year now, I already knew from the start that this isn't going to be an actual M developed vehicle. However, giving the promising stats and with the available option of LSD, it's certainly a win and I'm certain it will be a blast to drive and I will be taking this to the track as well. Is it going to be an M car? No, but I think BMW giving it an M Performance treatment is fine and will live up to its name. I think everyone can expect that this will have better performance than the 335i/435i M Sport at a lower price point. That's just my .02 |

Guys that "block" font style is for BMW M cars. The M3's and M5's font are not exactly the same, but very similar in terms of block lettering style: The reason M235i is not 100% the M block style is b/c..well, it's not a full-fledged M car. It's BMW's new "performance" line segmentation separating entry level, performance, and M lines. The non-M cars follow the same 435i style, the font with has more curves, etc. here's an old 335i font style, it's almost 100% like the 435i style: Last edited by mdosu; 10-22-2013 at 03:21 PM.. |

Not available on 1 Series, so very doubtful for 2 Series.

I swear I just saw a jalopnik post about the next mini getting a pseudo HUD, would be unfortunate to see the 2 series not follow suit.

If the M235i is an M car (as some people here claim), does that make my 135is an M car as well? As far as I know, the M235i replaces the 135is.
If so, GREAT! I've got an M car! If not, ahh...it's nothing to me because I know my car and our true place. C'mon, get real! the M235i is no M car. If you push that the 1M is no M car, then the M235i that much less of an M car. Remember, M badges and M accessories do not define an M car. |

After 200 plus comments (including my own) of 'it is' or 'it isn't an M car' who actually cares? When it's said and done surely the important thing is how it actually drives.

This was from the event that we saw the 2 series at (X5 Ride & Drive). Photos were not supposed to be posted, I guess the person that uploaded doesn't care about risking their position.
They did not however say we couldn't share this information (seen in the picture). This was included in our X5 packet.

I get it, you have a 1M which may be obsolete soon. Don't sweat it, but I doubt BMW will slow down progress because of you. When we see what the final M2 will look like, when/if it's released we can do real comparos. Maybe the M Badge will be diluted but it will only be in the eyes of the "purists" and not everyday consumers. If BMW can throw in a stock N55, with a slight tune, M Brakes and slap a M badge on it to get more market penetration at a cheaper price point than the direct competition (usintg existing manufacturing/tooling), it's could be considered marketing genius. Especially since most BMW's already outperform their competition and a smaller/less expensive M2 would appeal to a much younger demographic. I'd say leave the marketing and engineering to BMW. It seems like everyone would like a replacement for the e92/M3 sub 50k. Ain't gonna happen.
