BMW M2 Confirmed by BMW M Director! New M3 Underway. BMW Supercar Under Consideration
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW M2 Confirmed by BMW M Director! New M3 Underway. BMW Supercar Under Consideration Autoexpress comes in with some exciting confirmation from BMW M GmbH's new managing director Dr. Friedrich Nitschke - the M2 is in the works. But that's not all... a 'revolutionary' new M3 is in development and discussions are underway about a possible Lamborghini Aventador rival supercar, if the report is to be believed. The M2 will be based off BMW's F22 platform (Autoexpress uses 'F21') and will be based on the upcoming 2-series (BMW has plans to rebadge its small coupe model as 2-series beginning the next generation) due in early 2014. Its looks will purportedly be instantly recognizable from the standard model with unique front and rear end styling (though not as radical as Autoexpress' renders). The M2 coupe would be expected sometime in 2014/2015. Two engines are rumored to be in the running as the powerplant - a 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo with about 350bhp, similar to the 1M coupe's motor; and a tri-turbo 6-cylinder motor with similar performance but better MPG. It would have DCT transmission and brakes from current M3. Extensive use of CFRP would help keep the M2's weight down. Nitschke told Autoexpress: “In the 1M Coupe, we have a starter car for the M Division, and we are continuing to develop this project. Such models must be sporty, and offer extraordinarily low fuel consumption. This is something we could achieve with the M2. I think the 1M Coupe proves there is room for an M2, a coupe. Some very speculative renders from Autoexpress are below. We doubt these are based on very many confirmed styling details. While it looks great, it's simply a rendered combination of different BMW concept and production car bits. |

More like an evolved Z4M. And I thought BMW wanted 3 pedals for the lightweight and DCT + 6SPD for the heavyweights? What gives?

I don't mind the 5 and 6 splitting, but I think it is getting ridiculous to have models 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.
Not to mention, the iconic M3 coupe will now be a M4. Unless they don't play by their own rules. And end up with a 3 series sedan, 4 series coupe, and M3 coupe with no M4. Also, if this new M3 is going to be revolutionary how the hell are they going to fit in development time for a M2 before 2014? I'd rather they stay focused and deliver a M3 with all that great CFRP tech. It just feels overly forced. Not to mention poeple less informed will get confused between a 3 series - A4, 4 Series - A5, 5 series - A6.

A "revolutionary" M3? As in, 3 wheels intead of 4?
Unless it will be based on a completely new and separate F30 3-Series chassis/architecture then it will be as "revolutionary" as the F32 3-Series Coupe/Sedan. Just bring a lighter, at least 25% higher efficiency, higher performance at a lower price new M3... that will be revolutionary. |

A rival for a Lamborghini from BMW? That would be great. (even though the E60 M5 smoked the Gellardo, we need something for the the big bull.
I'll be waiting in anticipation.

Guys, I think you missed a line in the article..
"not as radical as Autoexpress' renders" These renders aren't BMW renders by my understanding.. 2nd, there's no way an M2 would compete with a R8... This would be an intro M vehicle, like the 1M.. For there to be an R8 competitor, BMW would need to reintroduce a vehicle such as a Z8. Now maybe I'm wrong, but isn't the BMW from mission impossible the R8 competitor? That is, if they make a non-hybrid/electric version. This looks like the main competitor would be Audi's Quattro. Oh and anyone read the blurb about a tri-turbo? Anyone else think that's a load of hot smoke? |
