Clear brown coolant color.

Good morning,
I just got a 2017 m240i with 35k miles and did the multi point inspection on it. The dealer said the low demo coolant was a clear brown color indicating it was degrading. I'm IMG a coolant flush, but my question is if this is a serious issue. The dealer didn't think it was but I just want to hear if anyone thinks it is? Thank u!

I guess you could consider it a problem because BMW coolant is green or blue. There may be approved aftermarket coolants that are brown...

If they are saying it's due for a change and you don't know when it was done last, go for a change in both systems. Not really sure what JB coolant additive is or why they would recommend it.

Ok thanks man. They said it wasn't a big deal, just to get it done.

Find a reputable indie shop that specializes in bimmers at www.bimrs.org. That coolant should be changed every three years. Most shops us coolants that are premixed.

There isn't a coolant which is brown, no how no way, the reason is that it would be confused with RUST which can be in the cooling system.
Colours would be orange, red, yellow, blue, red and dark green.
IF your coolant is brown, that car has been mistreated in so far as maintenance, someone has bought that car and at some point decided to either use TAP WATER instead of distilled water.
Typically coolant needs to be changed every 2 years or 30k, chances that has been in there for 5 at least OR as I said some muppet has used Tap water.

Why anyone buys a BMW , details it to an inch of its life and skimp on mainteance.
It boggles the brain.

I would be concerned on the amount of rust in the system, it needs a flush, problem is people make the mistake of using this crappy coolant flush aftermarket products, especially those that are too aggressive or contain harsh chemicals, can damage the cooling system. These products may not be compatible with all materials in the cooling system, potentially causing leaks or corrosion.

What I would do is, DRAIN the fluid, refill (using the vacuum process) run the car for 10 minutes, get it up to temp, let it cool down, drain it, refill it, drain it, refill it drain it 3 or or 4the time, max 5th should have it running clear.

1> Fill with distilled water only
2> Fill with mixture of 50/25 distilled water and your coolant
3> Fill with mixture of 50/50 distilled water and your coolant

OR get BMW to do a flush, they will back flush it and NOT use any chemicals, or use one which is safe.

ALSO be very wary that at this point a flush however done could sometimes dislodge deposits that have been acting as temporary seals, potentially causing leaks or other issues.

With me when buying a car I check all fluids, if the fluids fail I run !
