BMW 218i with B48
Hello to everyone,
I own a BMW 218i with apparently a B48 engine, when i bought it i wasn't into bmw enough to know that 218's usually had a 3 cylinder. I looked through the internet to know why they decided to install a B48 onto a 218i but i couldn't find anything, everything says that the F22 218i has a 3 cylinder B38 engine with 1,5 L of displacement. i was wondering: what was the difference between a 220i and 218i in terms of engine, since my bmw has a B48 what is the difference between mine and a 220i? (2021 F22) And if you guys know, why is this engine + car combo unfindable on the internet? almost like it doesnt exist (i could just be dumb but i looked numerous times) If someone could help me i would appriciate. Thank you in advance! |

Hey man, I think you are confused with the latest 2 series G42 model, which has indeed the B48 engine (4 cylinder) engine. Just check your VIN number with mdecoder .com to see what engine you have.

Hey there, I also have a 218i with the 2 litre B48 as well. Including mine which is a 2021, BMW decided for the last few final builds for the F22 218i to use the B48 right before the G42 came out.
Exterior wise they’re visually look the same with both featuring twin exhaust pipes but I believe the difference between the B48 218i and the 220i is although it has the same engine, but for the auto gearbox, the 218i features a regular (205) Steptronic transmission whereas the 220i and higher engine variants feature the (2TB) Sport Automatic transmission which includes paddle shifters for the steering wheel of which aren’t featured on any 218i, plus both gear selectors are totally different as well. I previously had a 2018 118i with the 1.5 B38 and considering the performance figures are the same, the difference of smoothness in the B48 is day and night difference, it’s just unbelievable. With the B38, can immediately tell the engine is working twice as hard but the B48 is effortless and smooth. |
