I'm not sure what numbers you're seeing listed. I get ~19mpg in stop & go traffic and can hit 30mpg on the highway in my M240xi if I'm good (but I'm rarely that good). My wife rarely drives in stop and go traffic or all highway (her commute is all local roads), but I think she gets 30 or so mpg driving around town.

Cruise-control interstate driving at 80-90 mpg, I got about 32 mpg in my stock 230i. I'm getting +30 mpg with normal town driving. When I engage Fun Mode, it drops by about 2 mpg.

But I have a 2016 M235i and it does not do well, maybe 22-24MPG if I stay out of it during my commute, 19-20 if I don't. My wife's car is a 430i with the same B46 as the 230i and even being a bigger car does rather well, getting 26-28 during her commute, 30+ on longer highway stuff.

Don't know if this is helpful, but with my 230i, my actual fuel consumption averages 8 l/100 km (>29 miles per US gal) around town and on long highway drives I have managed 5.7 L/100 Km - which is 41 mp US gal - thats in comfort mode on cruise control - (and its X Drive).....

The 230 gets better fuel mileage than the m235.. you could have googled that.

While we mustn't expect to achieve or not achieve the EPA mileage numbers, I believe in a comparison like this one they're likely to be useful. Below is what the agency shows for a 2018 230i automatic and a 2018 M240i automatic.
Going to the EPA site provides more information. As always, when it comes to real world mileage, the agency can only provide a general guideline. My experience, along with what I see on Car and Driver's site (where I look for meaningful controlled-condition highway mileage numbers), is that our BMWs are capable of easily exceeding any of the published rated mileage numbers. However, if you live in a world of stop-and-go traffic and enjoy using the power that our 4- and 6-cylinder cars have to offer, it seems evident that our cars' potential mileage values can drop by a third to a half compared to the EPA numbers. In the end, it's all about the right foot. At 23,797 miles, my M240i has returned 28.9 miles per gallon from mostly highway miles and moderately enthusiastic driving on back roads and highways.

I am still able to get 30-31 on highway but the overall average is about 26.

Literally no point trying to compare numbers, you drive a 230i on short journey with a heavy foot then you’ll get worse figures than an M240i on highways!
Having said that I didn’t expect my 240i to be getting 23-28mpg when my wife’s 440i GC was getting 34-38!😂

My long term average on my 240i manual RWD is right under 24 mpg. I have a mostly highway commute daily and take it for fun drives on weekends.

I have not touched the MGP meter on my 2015 235X since new. It has registered 19 mpg overall since the beginning, using only certified Top Tier 93 octane fuel, mostly from Mobil. I do mostly short trips around the area, a mix of hills and flats, curves and straights. No complaints.
