I had them look at the headrest when I went in for standard service and first thing the manager does is peel off another huge area and try and wipe more off with a towel and spray. It is still in with them but they are looking to get it replaced. I'll update.

Well, here is my $40 fix. I took the head rest to a highly rated upholstery shop to get the head rest recovered in BMW Oyster vinyl for $135, even though the head rest front cover is leather. The next day they called and, big surprise, Oyster vinyl is NLA(see my previous post). Oyster Leather was available but the cost of covering would jump to $260!! While I was picking up my still damaged head rest the upholstery shop's leather colorant and repair subcontractor walked in. He took pity on my poor head rest and said he would fix it on the spot for $40. Since he normaly charges $125 for house calls I figured for 40 bucks it was worth a shot...
As you can see (or maybe you can't) the pebble texture is slightly different where the original clear urethane top coat and pigmented color coat rubbed off. But, I'd say it's 3 feet perfect. (You don't notice it from 3 or more feet away) |

I forgot to add, the repair guy says that he repairs a lot of newer BMW's with the same problem. Mostly the lighter color BMW leathers. His theory is that with BMW's newest water based color coat and top coat repeated applications of anything with alcohol in it will eventually dissolve the two leather coatings, and almost every hair and body product has some alcohol in it. He said one customer who played tennis had most of the entire driver's seat damaged from Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunscreen she put on before driving to the tennis courts.

Looks like it's the flash but the leather on the new headrest definitely does not match the rest of the leather. Not sure how noticeable it is in person without a flash, though.

Yes, flash on piping.
You're right. I'm going to call and ask them to swap it back to the old one. |

Makes sense! Alcohol and driving don’t mix, unless your seats are Sensatec. 🤡

This is easy to fix!
ColourLock is used by detailers and there are plenty of videos on it. I posted before and after pictures. The kit cost me around $85 and now if the bolster wears again I have what I need to fix it. Check out my posting.

We have a 2015 with the same problem in the same exact place. Husband was driving and said his head felt sticky. His hair even turned red from the dye. Does anyone have a recommendation on repair?

The reason I'm back is I noticed my replacement is starting to do the same thing. I put nothing on the back of my head! It is pretty poor quality material. I may swap in the passenger side to extend the life longer. Someone suggested even trying ceramic coat on it. |
