Smoker’s package Q

Can anyone tell me why I see so many 2 series soft tops equipped with the smoker’s package? Do you lose USB ports with this option?

I tried the search function but couldn’t find anything on this. Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm not sure, but it could have to do with the area in front of the cup holders which either fits a storage tray or an ashtray.

I would presume BMW has data for spec'ing wholesale inventory that shows that buyers who choose convertibles are more likely than their coupe counterparts to have not fully assessed the consequences of smoking based on historical take rates.

Our 2 series convertible does not have the smokers package but we do believe the previous owner smoked in it. Had we suspected that at the time of test drive, we would not have bought it but it was so nice out that day we never thought to put the top up! Took me many hours of interior cleaning to get it to smell normal again.

I’m on the same page left. Seeing it on the spec sheet makes me concerned the previous owner used a very cool little car as an ash tray on wheels.

Wherever it is, without offering a reason, tell them you would like the top closed before you arrive. Then, rely on your nose. The prior owner may have just taken it as part of the car without any intention of using it. You'll soon know if it has been sealed up before you arrive.

Garage List
When I ordered my previous 330d and current M235i, the Smokers Package was the default fitting: the dealer explicitly recommended I didn't tick the no-charge 'Delete Smokers Option' as you lost more than you gained and it would make the car less atttractive to a potential buyer who smoked.

My recollection was that deleting it either removed the useful lighter sockets front and back and/or the substitute tray wasn't so ergonomic for storing stuff like keys and mobile phones. So it doesn't necessarily mean the previous owner was a smoker. But this may be a UK geography setup and not the same for US deliveries.

I keep a short rechargeable torch in the lighter socket, which can be very useful in winter. BMW actually do a branded one, (LED torch, rechargeable #63312410071) but alternatives are available on the Internet. On summer road trips, we use the rear lighter socket to power a portable electric coolbag.

I thought the smokers package was a North American thing. I had it in the pre LCI 228i and it was a hinged ash tray in the front of the center console and a cigarette lighter up front. My 2019 LCI 240i had a removable ashtray cup in one of the front cup holders and a cigarette lighter. My 2021 240i had no ashtray and no cigarette lighter.

A friend came home with a load of groceries in the back seat. One bag tipped over during the drive. Unknown to him, a plastic tube of dog food rolled under the front seat. A day later he left the car in an airport parking lot for 4 days. And it was hot.

Well, during that 4 days, I'm sure the interior temperature of the car was high. The plastic tube dog food exploded, then rotted. To make a long story short, he had to sell the car. No amount of cleaning got rid of the super foul odor. The smell penetrated everything - baked in. Heh!

I had a similar close call with the M240i last summer. Had a pack of cream cheese fall out of a shopping bag in the trunk and slide under a blanket that I keep in there to wrap around sharp or dirty items that are being carried. After about 3 days it seemed like a case of an air conditioning mould sort of smell developing, was stronger on the 4th day when I went searching and found the errant pack.

A month with a tray of baking soda in the storage cubby in the trunk sorted it out, the smell didn't return when the weather was still hot.

What's the point in owning a drop top 2 series, if you can't enjoy a dart with your mullet flowing in the breeze?
