M240i Convertible Rear Seat space
Can anyone comment on the rear seat space of a M240i convertible? I am currently look at either a M2 or M240I convertible. I know apples vs oranges, but I miss my old convertible and at the same time want a true M. Unfortunately, the 4 series is bigger than I want and am not a fan of the new look coming out.
Right now I drive a X2 and will be turning it in early next year. I need to fit two car seats in the back for my 4yr old and 7 yr old. I already know that car seats fit fine in a M2 but cannot find anything about the M240i convertible. When I look the tech specs online it looks like the M2 is about 3in less rear space then the X2 (X2 - 36.7in vs M2C - 33in). However, the M240i is even less at 31.8in. While only an inch less, I am worried that is the breaking point. Let me know if anyone has experience. I am going to try to go to the local dealers with my car seats but cannot do that until some 2021 stock gets in. |

Get the coupe, I've had both and the coupe has much more room. I put my dog in the back of the convertible with his Snoozer Lookout seat, you can look at dimensions online that takes up most of the room. My nephew is 5 and on the smaller side, he would not be happy in the back of my convertible with a booster seat.
The seat is quite a bit narrower too, to accommodate the top mechanism. So the kids would be forward and squished towards center compared to coupe.

Agree, if going 2 Series, Coupe is really the only option if kids in the back seat is a requirement. As much as I love my vert, it's definitely a "2 seater" as far as I'm concerned. Yes I have squeezed my self into the rear seat, but in nearly 4 years of ownership, I'm the only person who has sat back there and that was just to try it. Even though the 4 Series is bigger, I doubt the rear seat will be much better than the 2 Series, especially if it's similar to the previous 4 Series vert.

I have a pair of 7 year olds who love riding in my car. Although one of them prefers my wife's F23, which has even less leg room (probably about 3"-4" less than my F22).
Not an issue if your average height. Could get tight of you're on the taller side. |

By all means, get the convertible. It's great in all weather and if the seat's too small you get more privacy. Win-win.

I regularly drive my 3 y/o and my dog in my 228 convertible and they fit fine. The only issue is there is no rear anchor point for the car seat in the vert (required in Canada) so he has to face rear until large enough for booster seat. Best part of convertible is putting top down and dropping him in the seat to buckle up, which is 100x easier than climbing in the back seat with him to buckle him up!

Hi,
I think that the main issue with back seats of the F23 is the width. You have the feeling to be pushed to the center of the car because you have not enough place for your arm and shoulder. To conclude, it is OK for children or for short journeys but no more. Udayan Last edited by Udayan; 08-22-2020 at 01:52 PM.. |

Kids are gone, grandkids are in H.S. and College. No need for rear seat room except for small items. If we need more rear seat room we use the X3. We owned a 228 now thinking M235.

As you intend, the best way to resolve these space and convenience questions is to give it a go, and try each out.
Coming from an X2 I can understand your concern: my comment would be that it's not a choice of 2 Series coupé or 2 Series convertible, but 2 Series vs something bigger. If the 2 works, then coupé vs 'vert won't be down to space, more a case of personal preference. In your position, we moved to a Touring: the 320i Touring in the avatar when the kids were your ages, then as they got older, a 525tds Touring and a 528i Touring then a 330d xdrive Touring and finally, witht the kids grown up, an M235i Convertible. In-between, we had an Audi A6 Avant and a Volvo V70 estate. We did have a Jeep Grand Cherokee as well, but returned to the estate/touring format because this tends to give you more usable luggage space and more interior space for the extra external dimensions. And it meant that as the main user, I still got to drive a more dynamic vehicle vs an SUV. My personal view is that a convertible would be fine for young passengers even on longer journeys. And they'd enjoy it much more in the summer when the roof was down. The trouble with the 2 in either form will be if you have to haul a tonne of other stuff around with you on longer trips, such as camping or touring holidays, or trips to distant family.

Is there a legroom difference between the coupe and the convertible? My 228i was a coupe and I think it was the same as my current m240 vert. Headroom is another issue though. Unlimited obviously when the top is down but definitely cramped top up. The seats fold down too in the vert and there is a large enough passthrough for say golf clubs (maybe a 3 feet by 2 feet opening) , but its not fully open like the coupe is when the seats are down.

Dad coming to pick them up / drop them off in a M240i convertible is way cooler than being collected in almost any coupé, short of a Rolls-Royce Wraith. I suspect they'd endure a lot for the coolness upgrade of the 'vert.

@nzafi It would be interesting to hear what your final decision is, after you've had the opportunity to do a practicality test with the loan car .......
