What's the most fuel you've filled up with?
Listed fuel capacity is 13.7. I ran my car down until my range went from 1 mile to showing ---. I still only got 12.95 gallons in. Did BMW just design in a .7 gallon idiot factor into the range display?

All my previous cars are about the same, the trip computer gives about a 1-2 gallon "reserve" built in.
I've driven over 30 miles after seeing 0 on the display.

13.7 is the size of the dry tank when the tank is designed.
Lawyers override engineers. If your screen said "1 mile showing" guess how many miles you could have really driven? Lawyers make sure the car will warn you way before you actually run out of gas before some idiot runs out of gas in a dangerous situation and sues BMW "It told me I had 3 miles left and I only went 2.7 miles and ran out of gas while running away from that tornado and my whole family died!" Then assume you drove the car until it completely ran out of gas and pushed it up to the gas pump. Does the gas pickup in the tank actually reach the very bottom of the tank and get every single drop or is there still some gas in there? Now double that because we have two fuel pickups for the dual tank design over the driveshaft. Now lets get the fuel pump. How accurate is the fuel pump sensor thats pumping the gas when it says 12.95 was put into the car? |

I probably won't do that again; I'd like the pump to remain covered (and cooled) by gasoline in the tank.

We actually do know how accurate the fuel pump will be, because there are laws surrounding that sort of thing. In the UK pumps are required to be accurate to within 0.5%, and in the states it depends on the specific state. In Seattle, for example, the pump must be accurate to within 6 cubic inches for every 5 gallons pumped (0.52% allowable error). Generally speaking the pumps are required to be accurate to within 1% or better.

Running dry with a modern car is a recipe for disaster, for a number of reasons.
That is why the listed capacity differs from the empty fuel indicator. For all intents and purposes, the tank is 'empty' when such is indicated. One small point: no matter what fuel you use, some 'solids' will always accumulate at the bottom of the tank. You don't want that stuff in your engine. Some lunatics will always fill at a half tank for that reason. |

13.5 gallons or 51.08 liters. A month ago the car went from 8km of range down to a - in a few hundred feet, still had to drive a couple more kilometers to the service station. Have a photo of the receipt to prove it.

Never had to put more than 11 in it, I usually fill up around 1/4 of a tank though.

Gauge read 3 mi, filled with 12.75 gallons. When you see 3 mi panic starts to set in and you start questioning yourself why didn't I get gas at the previous exit? Or my favorite one in town, the Shell gas station is only 2 miles away.

You should change your handle to "Brinksman" - most I've done is 12.3 after a track day (I learned - now I refill w/ the track gas midday so I don't kill my pump). Since it calculates range from recent mpg, I get crazy pessimistic ranges after a track day (like a quarter tank showing <40mi range; I think range was about 5 for that 12gallon fill). When I'm not around a hundred BMW drivers with race jugs, I get too nervous and fill before a quarter tank.

$43.13 for 12.186 gallons. Damn California 91 pricing.
How about most miles on a tank? I drive in stop and go traffic on the 405 in LA so average about 27-28 MPG, I’m sure the highway guys are killing that number. |

About 300 gallons, but it was in a boat... It was also more than $1000, thankfully it wasn't MY boat!
