Wish list for the 2022 2 Series Coupe

So if the latest rumors are to be believed, even though the 2 "Gran Coupe" will be FWD, it would seem that although unfortunately the convertible will be discontinued, you'll still be able to get the 2 Coupe and M2 and they will still be RWD. It also seems it will be built on the CLAR platform, which by all accounts is a good thing as it seems to be getting really good reviews with the new 3 series.

With so few other details, I'm curious what other current 2 series owners would put on their ultimate wish list for the next iteration.

Here's mine:

The B58B30O1 engine that the Z4 has - please no M235 with the 4! This may be tough with them trying to meet economy standards tho and wanting to save their bigger engines for cars they can sell for 6 figures.

PLEASE KEEP THE MANUAL. I know I'm a dinosaur, but I just noticed today in an article that the current 2 and 4 series are the only BMWs you can get now with a manual and I think they should at least have a couple of models that cater to us purists.

Don't make it much bigger, if at all bigger. There seems to be some rule with cars that you have to make every iteration of a car bigger. Please don't.

Grab the instrument panel from the current M5 not the ghastly over cluttered thing from the new 3 / X5 / Z4. I really HATE how busy the new style instrument clusters look. Can't there be one throwback to the classic BMW style?

The interior could use some of the same loving that the 3 series got. If you are gonna sell a car for over $50K come on guys. I don't need cooled seats or crystal shift nobs, but upping the interior game a little wouldn't hurt.

So that's about it. Is this too much to ask? I know I'm mostly saying don't do too much to change how it is right now. For the NEXT next iteration I think an all electric version would be nice (I know, blaspheme) but for now, keep it classic!

What other things would folks like to see in the new 2?

throw-back / analog styling and features should rule the interior design principles for this model.

i'd even go for manual sport seats like the ones i had in my '87 E30!

Overhead grab handle for passenger and sliding visors on both sides. Space for spare tire under the cargo floor.

I agree with the following suggestions:
  • Basic gauges instead of over-the-top digital. If digital, keep the analog look
  • Overhead grab handles
  • Sliding visors
  • Extra fuel capacity

And I would add some useful (but optional) tech from newer models such as:
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • 360 degree cameras for parking assist and remote viewing
  • Reverse assist to help get out of complicated parking situations
  • Heads up display

In fact, some of those options really should be included in the Premium Package on the M240i considering it's already up to 55k fully loaded with xDrive.

agree to disagree, and since you made them optional i wont beat you up over the suggestions

we have all that tech on my wife's new X3, and i wouldnt opt for any of it on a 2-series sport coupe. feels like it defeats the purposes of an engaged driving experience...not to mention unnecessary, albeit not extreme, weight.

2018 BMW M240i  [0.00]
• A 200# diet, if we're dreaming
• An improved EPAS system; feel the road!
• A 'disable' button for auto-dimming mirrors, d'oh
• More customizable engine/suspension/exhaust settings
• A 'mild' hybrid version for short errands
• A more upscale interior
• More SensaTec seating color options
• Blind spot alert and active cruise control
• Individual paint program at a decent price
• Make the CarPlay subscription fee go away
• Rear pop-out windows would be awesome

EDIT: Keep it narrow-bodied!

Since we're dreaming:

A 400# reduction in weight
Hydraulic steering
A limited slip differential
The option of a true sport suspension
An ability to fit wider tires with ease
Non-crazy wheel offsets (i.e., a greater choice of aftermarket wheels)
Wheel studs, not bolts
Manual seats
Passenger grab handles
An ability to turn rev-matching on/off in every driving mode

We also have an X3 (2018 M40i) with all the bells and whistles. I mention those optional tech goodies only because I do miss some of them from time to time when driving the M240i. Especially the adaptive cruise in stop-and-go traffic.

Dreaming but realistic in terms of technology and price.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION - I have little interest in anything short of a fully autonomous car that isn't stick shift.
200 lb weight loss is doable.
Sliding sunvisors
Better steering feel (not weight, feel).
Customizable options that are all electronics anyways: this includes start/stop, rev matching, mixing matching suspension, exhaust, steering, and stability control in "custom" setting.
Better soundproofing
Factory stereo that isn't laughably terrible.

Options for those who want to pay for it:
LSD option that is $1000, not $3000.
360 degree camera
adaptive cruise with full stop-start.
Better quality leather.
COOLED SEATS. Not if I were in San Francisco but where I live, it's 80% humidity in the summer. It's so humid everything outside is soaked in the morning. When I get out of the car my back/butt of my dress clothes are sweaty even if I had the AC on since leather doesn't breathe as well as cloth seats. I have a seat pad to help but it looks cheesy compared to a factory vented seat.

I understand that some of the respondents have been blue-skying, but some of these nostalgic wishes just ain't gonna come true, notably hydraulic steering. For better or for worse, that has gone the way of the dodo, in the same way that incandescent bulbs have. No matter how much my wife loves the yellow glow, they just ain't coming back, for the same reason as hydraulic steering ain't coming back: they consume much more energy.

i don’t want to derail this thread with a debate on defining responsible manufacturing, but i’d like to posit the following thought (which is really just an extension of the debate on electric vehicles): the costs of mining and processing the types of metals necessary to produce the myriad chips, sensors, servomotors, and other gadgets *could* reach a tipping point in which it makes sense to build vehicles with more analog / mechanical components. In fact, the past could become the future.

When I see a request for an "ultimate wish list", you can be assured that hydraulic steering is going to be on my version of the list. This has nothing to do with reality, and everything to do with wishing.

I vote(wish) for:

1. 200 pound wt. loss
2. BLIS as an option
3. And a slightly bigger gas tank

But I am still happy as hell with my car the way it is!

I wish for the following:

Better steering feel, not weight
Bigger gas tank
Weight loss
Cloth interior option
LSD for 1000 not 3000 or not available on the 4 cylinder
Smoother 6 spd manual, less notchy with shorter throws

That is about it off the top of my head

Ok I’m cool with all but am confused why LSD for 1000 not 3000 (agree) or not available on the the 4 cylinder?? Do you have some issue with those of us that choose the 4?
