Exhaust Flap Rattle

So I noticed the last couple days with the windows rolled down and driving by parked cars or through tunnels a rattle from the exhaust. I read up on forum and doesn't appear N55 is prone to wastegate rattle, but some have talked of the exhaust flap that opens and closes on the drivers side causing noise.

I started car, took a flashlight under that side, touched the rod/pin on the right side of the exhaust where the flap is and the noise stopped. As soon as I took my finger off the rattle returned. I took a screwdriver and opened the flap and the noise stopped again.

Other than dealer visit, does anyone have a quick fix for this? I guess I could wedge some wire in there, but I don't want to break the thing either.

Have the exact same issue. There is a bulletin on it. The valve will need to be replaced. Just waiting for mine to arrive at the dealer.

Just noticed this about 2 weeks ago on my M Performance exhaust that's only 2 months old. Goes away once the valve is open.

Mine has rattle whether is sport mode or comfort mode. Someone said a bulletin on this, so I guess I'll have to stop off at the dealer, should be an easy fix, but hopefully they don't give me crap for the Fabspeed downpipe.

I'm sure it'd be a quick fix to swap the sloppy valve making the noise, but I've got a downpipe and I'd rather not have a warranty claim to get them prodding around the car more.

I may try just pushing some wire by the pin to take up the vibration. If I barely touch the end of the rattling valve the noise stops.

How did the fix go? Any issues with customer service?

Upon examination the small piece between the actuator and the flap is missing, so the flap is just kind floating in there and hence the rattle. I took some thin wire and held it open, can't see it, so looks same. Also, the fact that I'm not holding open the actual actuator/motor assembly, not risk of this burning the thing out.

Long term I'd like to fit the part back in there, and I know it's under warranty, but then I've gotta take out my AA8 tune and I have a sport downpipe, so the less a dealer goes pocking around the better.

The sound would not stop after the car was warmed up. There is a physical part that is missing between the one end of the flap and the actuator/motor that turns the flap. On mine, there is nothing controlling the flap as the part is simply gone. Looks like it would be a $5-$10 type of spring clip between the 2 parts and I just haven't had the time to research the part. But, I kinda like having the flap open all the time anyway and rattle free after my free fix.

I have stock exhaust not m-performance. If you are getting rattle all the time, it's most likely the exact same flap issue. If you jack the car up about a foot, and look on the outside of the exhaust where the flap is located, you will see on the left side there is no part connecting the flap part to the actuator that is supposed to control it. It would be covered under warranty assuming your car is stock, probably a 1 minute fix if I had the part. Or a 5 minute fix if you use some thin wire to hold flap open yourself.

I just dropped it off at the dealer, it was unbearable to drive my car around with that noise. lol I did notice when you put your finger on it that it would stop. I am hoping that this is covered under warranty being that it's a factory part.

How prevalent is this issue? I have the stock exhaust right now but want to switch to a used mpe one and it has the actuator removed so I have to move that over. This is making me wonder if I should still do the exhaust cause I do not want to deal with a rattle. Looking for input! Thanks

I know it’s been a while since anyone posted on this rattle thing.
I didn’t want to start a new thread.

I have stock exhaust no mods and have the same rattle issues as others. Soon as I put my finger on the clamp it stops.

What was everyone’s solution?

I don’t feel like bringing it in.

Just under 3.9k miles

Thanks

I had the pin break on my old 228 before I traded it in. I bought a new one for $8, but I couldn't ever get the actuator to stop in the right place to line up the new pin. The dealership also quoted a hilarious $90 to install it. I ended up just wrapping a bit of wire around the flap to keep it open at all times and that worked just fine for me.

My M235 has the M Performance Exhaust and I hear the flap rattling a little on startup, but once the flap is open I don't hear it at all. At this point, I think I'd prefer that there was no flap to begin with.

I’ve been doing research on all bmw models with the flap rattle on the forums.
Most do say when they mod the faps to stay open the rattling stops.
I came upon an easy way to keep the fap permanently open by removing fuse 146. I have the 230i exhaust. For the M235i/M240i fuse 146 & 147 in the trunk.
I removed the fuse while the valve was open and so far one day later no rattle.

I’ll update in a few more days.

I did hear it’s difficult to install the pin spring clip.

That or you can unplug the sensor right behind the flap. Make sure it opens when you unplug though.
