Conti DWS06 > Mich Pilot AS3+
Let me preface this by saying that I'm in the Pacific NW where we get maybe 1-3 days of snow per year on average so I don't feel the need for dedicated snow tires. I can't justify the cost and the space it takes up in my garage for a second set of tires. I've ran 2 sets of Continental DWS06 on my previous car (E92 335i) for 4 years and really liked how they gripped in the sub-freezing temps. This morning it was 31 degrees and the roads were slick and I was sliding all over the place going 15-20mph and felt like I was on ice skates! I've never had this issue with the DWS06's and they handled quite well in iced over roads. I went with the new Mich Pilot AS3+ because of all the great reviews but I can tell you that the DWS06 is much better suited for icy roads. I'm very disappointed in the cold weather performance of the Michelin's. They have around 4000 miles on them so they're well broken-in at this point. Once these tires wear, I'll go back to the Conti's. Anyone else disappointed in the Michelin's?

No, not disappointed in the Michelins, and actually the opposite as I have never relied on them for anything close to winter...not their strength. They are my preferred 3 season tire, and then I would stop by the local indy shop associated with Tire Rack for a quick 20 lugnut pit stop and let Blizzaks do the rest of the year (when I lived in a cold climate all year). For your use case, DWS06 may be a better overall solution, as you will make up in your mild winter what you sacrifice in performance the rest of the year. You can find this same info on tirerack.com ahead of your purchases. You may find someone near you on this forum interested in relieving you of the slightly used AS3+ at a good price, so you can move on to your preferred setup again.

Hwn,
I am not familiar with the Michelin's as I have never used them. I have been through several sets of the DWS tires over the years and swear by them for an all season tire. The only tire we had that was in the same league was the Nokian All-Season tire (the designation eludes me) that was snow rated. Interestingly, the tread pattern on the Conti and the Nokian tires was very similar. Sorry to hear about your experience. Good luck and be safe.

If you look at the bar charts, however, the A/S 3+ appears to be the better tire. The discussion of winter performance in the test report doesn't really explain this: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=230. After looking at these two reports and test results, if I were in the market for this type of tire and focused on snow and ice performance, I'd call the Rack directly and ask someone to advise me on which to choose.

With your very few snow days per year, it sounds similar to what we have here in mid-TN. With maybe 5 snow days (that's on the high side) per year, that leaves 360 days without winter conditions. My AS3+ purchase was based on the 360 days, not the 5. I am very happy with the non-snow characteristics of the Michelin. It is grippy, quiet and responsive. I loved the MPSS and wanted to keep a similar feel while having at least minor snow capabilities. The M235 is our daily driver.

The TireRack test noted the Conti was the least performance oriented and the Michelin was the most. (Conti lacking in dry handling and steering response) For my 360 non-snow days a year, I chose the Michelin over the Conti.

We prefer quieter tires, and that's why we put the Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus on the wife's Mazda 3. She has Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3s for winter driving (assuming we have a winter this year).

Stick, cool data. Thanks.
Hwn, FWIW I drove last year in my 550i (RWD, no LSD) 6M the entire Connecticut winter on DWS06 tires. No issues in the snow, with one exception where I was overzealous with the throttle (easy to do with that car); no harm, no foul. Reminded me to be smooth with my inputs! My only gripe with the DWS tires was that once they wore down a bit, their snow traction diminished pretty dramatically, which made me change them out at ~30K to be safe. On the 550i, this was especially true for the rears which for some reason, I wore out rather quickly...LOL. The DWS in general is a pretty hard tire so it can last a long time. We probably have put 200-300K mikes on these between my wife (A6 and Allroad), Son's (A6 6M) and my cars and I am waiting for the new set of Bridgestone Dueler's on my wife's X5 to wear out so I can replace these with DWS's. Regarding noise, I always considered the DWS to be fairly quiet, but I do not have much to compare them to...

For this reason, we change our snow tires out at 6/32nds.

We get no snow here, just cold nights, so I went with the A/S 3+ when I wore out my PSS. They seem to work fine for my needs, but I was shocked at how much louder they seemed than the PSS. I read and was expecting the opposite. Odd how this seems to be such a subjective thing...

We have Michelin Pilot AS3+ tires on my wife's SAV. Overall they are very good tires, however, they are not snow tires. I almost put her car into a ditch on a snow covered road. Felt like zero traction to me. Very nervous road feel in the snow. My rear wheel drive M2 is awesome in the snow with Michelin Alpine PA4 snow tires on all four corners. As long as I have enough ground clearance the car is unstoppable in the snow.

drader, very good practice...and good advice for us all! As has been previously discussed on the forum, tires are the only thing keeping us attached to the road. Best to be sure they are in good order. As a veteran of many upstate NY winters, tires and batteries...never scrimp, if you have the means. The downside is not desirable.

While I've never owned the AS3+, your experience sounds comparable to the Bridgestone Potenza re970as I had on my 2012 WRX. Those tires were billed as performance all seasons and they were shockingly good handlers, BUT my God they were terrible in the snow. My WRX could barely turn or stop. That was when I learned that if a performance all season has excellent warm weather performance, then it's cold/winter/snow performance will be terrible. I went to DWS06 for my winter tires the next season and my WRX was a snow cat. The DWS06 did really good in 20 to 70 degree weather. Once the temps went above 70, they got pretty mushy. In the 35-50 degree weather, they were stellar in the dry and wet. They wore well and were quiet. They're also pretty light for a tire.
When I got my M235, I went with winter performance Michelin Alpin PA4s. These tires are KILLER in the 10 to 30 degree temps and in light snow, BUT they're handling and braking limits in the dry are much lower than the DWS06. We only have maybe 5 to 8 days a year in Kansas City where there's measurable snow on the roads 2 hours after a snow event. The PA4s wear fast and are unsporting looking. I also don't need to drive in the snow. When the PA4s wear out, I'm going back to DWS06s.
