Let's Cut this Out
As noted in a previous post, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I for one, again, am grateful we have the 2 series here to enjoy and discuss. We are very fortunate to have such a great package to enjoy across the model spectrum.
Berating others for dressing up their cars is not creating value here. If it makes them happy and feel good, there is no harm done to anyone here in the forum. Ironically, I have had people tell me my car is not an "M" car since it is not a M2. Do I care? No. Do I care if my is considered a "M" car or not? No. I purchased my car for my own reasons, not because it had a "M" in the name. People are entitled to their opinion (although they do not need to share it necessarily) and I am entitled to choose my own reaction to this statement. Let's focus on the positives here.

I for one am grateful for the amateur MHPs who diagnose the "issues" of other forum members- and they do so with such a captivating combination of arrogance, condescension, and smug self-righteousness.

It's interesting you glean those negative attributes from anything that's been posted in this thread, yet you're chomping at the bit for the opportunity to impart the same behavior on the guy with the '93 325i.

Trump finally doing some good before he get's impeached...
Honestly, I would never ridicule someone for a fake AMG, M, Audi S, badge on a non-applicable vehicle.. Some folks just can't afford the real thing and living vicariously is closest they'll ever come it to.. It's all good, It's just I get a chuckle by their ignorance. Like my friend who put a dozen "S Line" badges on his brand new Audi A5. So I asked him; "Do you know what the 'S-Line' entails" and got a confused "No." At least take some time to educate yourself on the subject you're imitating and I'll give you a pass.. |

The car was seen by hundreds of BMW enthusiasts at Cars and Coffee events, at the track and on the autocross course, and on the street. While it drew many comments, the subject of the badge came up only once or twice at C&C events. For people concerned about this subject, I'm wondering where they think this car fits on the scale of unacceptability, and what they would think if they saw it in traffic?

[QUOTE=dradernh;24122015]This one reminded me of the car below. It started as a 1989 325is and was converted except for bodywork by a race shop to a street M3. It was then made track-ready with aftermarket wheels and suspension. To improve the car further, the shop also stuffed an S38B35(!) into the engine bay.

A friend of mine wrote the book (literally) on transplanting the S50B30/32 engines into the 318ti. A super cool car IMHO and a complete sleeper. Scary fast and well sorted by the owner, who is a BMW aficionado. He has a simple "M" badge on the back lid. Falls into the "judging books by their covers" category...LOL

On the other hand, a friend of mine used to autocross a seriously modded E36 M3. Just for giggles he removed the M3 badge and replaced it with a 316i badge. Several months later European Car published a letter from a clueless nitwit asking where he could buy a 316i like the one he saw that set FTD at a local SCCA event...

honestly i wish my m240i would had just been named 240i. because it's not a true M car, I don't want that misleading badge and its a mouthful to say. 240i is much easier to say.
a lot of my co-workers think I have an M2 because they dont know any better. smh. Some of them think the "40i" mean its extra tuned up M2. when asked i just say i have a 240i now. |

On BMW UK website M performance cars are in their own separate categories from non-performance series and M cars Thus whilst our cars (m240i) are not 'full M cars' they are neither 'ordinary' series cars as well. BMW makes sure this is the case by labelling the engine as M performance. The M town adverts by BMW has a M performance cars in it m850i Our cars are M-lite

I agree that these are not M-cars - not in any way, shape, or form, I believe.

The OG M2 engine was developed further by the M division. Thus that make it a non M car? The nomenclature for cars does change all the time and not limited to BMW. BMW did not hold a consultation before naming their original cars 230i etc We just got familiar with the naming. The same familiarisation would happen with the current nomenclature
