Busted side wall! Perfect reason to ditch run flats
So this happened today! Car has about 10k kilometres on it. Don't know if I'm happy about this or not but I'm taking this as perfect opportunity to ditch these pirelli run flats! I have Michelin PSS on order and going to install by the end of this week!

Got out without a scratch, not bad! PSS's will be primo compared to those RFT's, it's never "too early" for new tires in a case like this

I took off the run flats from my M235 and went to pss as/3 and they are great.
Had Michelin PSS on wife's 335 (used to be my car) and when they wore out I went back to the orig Conti RFs because I did not want her to get caught without a spare. ( I have snow tires for winter). Putting the run flats back on the 335 sure made it thrumpier over uneven pavement and the handling is decent but the PSS have some road noise and thump in the ride to but when they have lots of tread, they handle very well. I still hate runflats and would not have them on a car I drove daily but in this case its for peace of mind ( and not getting hammered if she gets a flat) |

I was glad too that the wheels survived without a scratch. Still call that a win. That sucks! I feel for you!

I am sticking with RF's. Peace of mind. My wife wouldn't know the first thing about changing a tire. When she drives it is usual locally so I can get to her very quickly is she does flat. If we do longer drives it is usually in the X3 as I want to keep mileage low on the 228. I think they handle well enough for our style of driving. And, I have tire and wheel insurance.

So what is causing these sidewall bulges? Big potholes or what?
I've logged well over 250k miles in my ~14 years of driving various cars, mostly on crappy Midwest roads. Only flat tire or tire failure I had was in an Enterprise rental car. Go figure. I feel like if you know your car, know your tires, and look out for shit that doesn't belong on the road, there is absolutely no need for these expensive RF tires that, apparently, cannot take a bump without bulging a sidewall.

Didn't notice anything until after I got out of the car and saw it popped. Has it not been on the driver side, I wouldn't have noticed anything right away. I do a regular walk around the car to check for things like this or any damage so I know it just happened recently.

Runflats may not be the ideal tire for most people under most conditions; however, it's a necessity for me. When I decide to take out my Mz3 to work, 90+ miles roundtrip, I wouldn't want to be stuck somewhere without a spare, nor floor jack (doesn't fit w/o the spare in the passenger seat and the heavy jack in the trunk banging around). I'm not keen on the 'air & stickem' in a can, and I do still carry the OEM mobility kit in the trunk.
Recently, I purchased P Zero rf's and so far have just over 1000 miles (knock on wood). I have a membership with AAA, but would prefer to just drive it home. I've also purchased one set of rf Blizzak winters for one of my cars, for those days that are really wintry, and the thought of pulling over in a snow bank isn't appealing. Otherwise, the third car gets PSS's, a spare tire, and lightweight aluminum floor jack. |
