What car after an F22, especially a 220d?
Hi everyone,
I'm quite sure 99% of the forum is unaware of the existence of diesel F22 but it is a thing I've been driving one (F22 220d 184hp 380nm of torque, Mineral White) for a while. It has some relatively nice specs like m sport package, harman kardon surround, Sport Automatic Transmission with paddle shifters, NBT navigation, rear camera, bixenon headlights, sunroof, auto folding mirrors, cruise control, alcantara blue stitched sport seats, m performance rear diffuser, spoiler, kidney grills etc. It is my first diesel car in 12 years and I'm having hard time getting used to diesel tractor sound. But yeah the consumption really puts a smile on your face even after flooring the pedal like an hour. High torque makes you feel like you are being launched to the outer space until you take a glance at speedometer and obviously you are familiar with the fact that you can't high rev a diesel. The factory's claim on 0-60 (0-100 in EU) : 7,1 sec. however, i could only manage to get 7.465 sec at best (maybe due to low fuel quality in here) As a fan of the F22 2 series; I had to go for the diesel because there is only two engine options for F22 here. you can either get a 218i - 1499cc 3 cylinder 136 hp (I bet you haven't heard about this one too ) or you can get 220d so in performance wise the diesel is more sensible pick. Note: you can order a 240i at a price that you can easily buy two and a half 220D here or an M4 in other countries sadly, so there are only 4 or 5 of them roaming the streets Long story short, I'm considering selling this one to get a petrol engine. If you had to pick one of those what would be your choice among these after an F22 220d; 1)2012 F30 328i (sportline or luxury line since there is no other options on the market) It has a really nice engine but 2 out of every 3 BMWs you see in traffic is an F30 which is why I went for the F22 at the first place. 2)2011 or 2012 mk2 Audi 2.0 tfsi quattro S-tronic 3)2012 Mercedes C250 coupe 4)2010 Audi S3 Sportback in Sprint Blue (265 hp manual transmission) 5)Keep your tractor, it is a lovely car Any advice would be appreciated Last edited by eray; 07-12-2017 at 12:26 PM.. |

What version of quattro / haldex / whatever is in that Audi? They never brought it here and I never looked into the A3 they did. If it's a real quattro or rear biased that's a compelling choice.
Otherwise BMW. There's a reason you see so many of them around, not because they were giving them away for free. They are popular for a reason. That 2.0 Audi is meh at best, and the Benz is under powered. You get the 328 and throw a stage 1 tune on it and you've got a very capable all around car.

so yeah they are basically FWD cars with a quattro badge. I just really like the TT for it looks (poor man's porsche) Panaromic glass roof and lovely sport seats makes the Benz appealing, but I agree that it is underpowered and has a fuel consumption of a 300hp engine while it has 204hp. also I've read somewhere that they have timing chain problems after 33k miles (100k km) maybe I should consider benz in my late 40s. I guess going for a 328i is going to make me much more happier than those since I've established a bond with the brand |

Just my personal opinion, but I'd either keep the F22 you have now or go with the F30. Switching cars is always a money loser, so I'd probably keep the F22 assuming you are not having trouble with it. Then once the current C gets to a price you can stomach, jump on it. The C450/43 I have driven and it's amazing, and the coupe is gorgeous. The smaller engine is perfectly fine as well so you should be OK with that.

Benz hasn't held value here either. it has the same price as C180 (1.6 liter 156 hp version) I don't have any problems with the F22 actually, I'm just having trouble loving the diesel engine maybe an engine tune will entertain me for a while. perhaps I should save up some cash and go for a more recent model year cars like F32 or the new C class coupe as you suggested. the new 330i isn't imported by the dealerships anymore. but the 430i is. Yeah I will. just trying to get some ideas if there are some folks who are familiar with those cars to make up my mind. Last edited by eray; 07-12-2017 at 03:19 PM.. |

Just FYI I have 2 328s, a 2014 diesel and a 2016 wagon. The diesel is really nice and the wagon (Stage 1 Dinan) is a very, very nice car. There's nothing wrong with them at all. If you are expecting the same sort of performance as an M235 it's not going to keep you happy, but especially with the tune the car is nothing to sneeze at. Both are fun enough around town and I take one or the other for highway trips and leave my M235 at home.

I didn't know the diesel engine has the 28d badge in the US.
could be a marketing trick. Actually around town it is surprisingly fast for a diesel. It is swift enough to overtake a few cars in seconds during a traffic jam. On highway it is pretty comfortable for a coupe. I can't expect a performance anywhere near M235i you're right. I think I just miss revving the engine and a rattle free car. Apart from those the car is an all rounder for me. |

I was just referencing the guy who has the M235 and told you the 328 was crap, get an S3. They're two totally different things.
If I could get one here in the US I would definitely take that S3 you are looking at and use it as a bad weather car. They never sold them here just the A3. Now we cannot get the sport back just the sedan.

Winters are quite harsh where I live. There were some days that I couldn't move the car an inch due to snow.
The S3 I am looking at has very low mileage (16k miles) and sprint blue is the rarest color which makes it appealing. I just wonder if that 10% rear biased quattro would help me deal with understeer. I personally never liked the sedans, the lack of engine options on small cars force me to look at sedans. Quote:
I once drove a friend's 320i and it felt a bit sluggish, it was like driving a 5 series from a different era. More powerful engine could spice up the things I guess. Sadly there is only 1 (yes ONE) 228i around and the owner doesn't want to sell it for obvious reasons Last edited by eray; 07-13-2017 at 12:30 PM.. |

and about the tech part, something happened today. I got a call from BMW service telling that my car sent an sms 1 hour ago that it needs maintenance. Eventually I thought that even this little -maybe not so important- moment could be sign not to sell the F22 The problem here is that the quality of diesel fuel is low. Usually it is high on sulfur in a grade that way above the EU standards. it really affects the performance but anyway I guess I will stick with my F22 until I could afford an F32 or an F22 LCI 230i maybe when it comes out. |

I live in the UK and had an Audi A3 2.0L Turbo Sline, then a 330d xDrive Touring and then had to choose the replacement at lease end.
I considered an S3 Sportback, as I found the Audi A3 internal space vs external size was extremely good i.e. with the seats down the day-to-day capacity for practical jobs like moving stuff was substantial, but it's still a relatively small car in terms of external dimensions. Yet you can get 4 people inside in relative comfort. The big downside of the Sline was the lowered suspension. Which is even lower in an S3. Not only was it a very harsh ride, but I repeatedly 'bottomed' the car out - something that's never happened in any other car I've owned. Things like speed bumps, or awkward drops where one road or a drive joins another at an angle were a nightmare. I went for a petrol 2 Series to replace the 330d and I've not regretted it. So I think your decision to stick with what you've got and wait for a new model has a lt of merit against going for an S3. I think I would have loved the S3 20% of the time but also hated it 20% of the time, versus my 2 which I love 40% of the time and the rest it's a daily drive like any other. Perhaps I'd score 5% against the 2 because of its small fuel tank.

I used to own an A3 Sportback back in 2009. It was a solid car inside and outside in terms of build quality when compared to rivals but it just lacked driving pleasure as any other FWD car.
I must agree with your statement about lowered suspension. It can become a nightmare in an S3. I even deleted the M suspension option on my M sport car before i ordered it because I was sure that runflat tyres wouldn't let me miss the firm ride. Unfortunately, the 2 series only come in two engine options here. The mighty 218i (3 cylinder 136 hp petrol engine) and the 220d of course. However, I've heard that there will be some quota for 230i LCI when it comes out. I will do my best to not miss it |

Sorry to revive an "aged" thread. Ended up getting an Audi S3 Quattro 300hp (2014 MY)
been driving it for 5 months now and already missing BMW. Car is fast but it lacks thrill. too much grip is not something i am very fond of. and multimedia is trash compared to idrive |
