225 Square Set Up
I see a lot of talk here about the 245 square set-up ,but I am thinking about doing a 225 square set up.
My car is a 2014 M235i with staggered OEM tires/wheels. I've tracked it a couple of times, and am getting frustrated with how fast the tires wear out, especially the outside fronts. I have run OEM PSS and A/S 3+. i understand neither are optimum track tires and the best move would be dedicated track tires with camber plates. My car is a daily driver that gets taken to the track probably 4 times a year. I consider myself a novice driver, skill-wise, with much to learn. I have an HPDE class coming up in Sep, and I'd like to put fresh tires on for that event (the event is a 600 mile round-trip road trip from my house). I'm leaning toward springing for a set of rims to mount these tires on. I'm sold on a set of 4 18x8 rims with 40 mm offset, but trying to figure out the rubber. I'm really impressed by the price of the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2s (a max performance tire). Quite a bit cheeper than the Michelins I have been running, and they are offered with a 100 rebate right now. Out the door on a square set (225 all around) would be about $100/tire. In my mind, I think that is pretty good bang for the buck. It goes up another $100 if I put 225 on front and 245 on rear. Is the extra 20mm of rubber on the back worth the $100 extra? I have also started researching extreme performance tires, and the Fallen Azenis RT615K+ has caught my eye. Tire Rack has them for $130/tire. If I thought they would cream the Hankook's on the track performance-wise, and still be safe to drive on the street day in and day out, I would probably spring for a 225 square set of them as my summer tires. So big questions: 1. 225 square vs 225/245 staggered? Big deal/difference on the track? 2. Max performance vs extreme performance. Which would you pick for daily drive, occasional on the track? Keep in mind, I'll keep a set of A/S 3+ on another set of rims for cold wx driving. Thanks in advance. |

I would do 245 all around.... if not then 225 all around so you can rotate front to back and side to side... I would get RE-71R or RS4 just for the track and keep your A/S 3+ for daily driving.. |

You don't like the Falken Azenis? How much performance do you think i give up by running 225 instead of 245? I'd like to think it is marginal. Seems like there are a lot more options available in 225 vs 245, and the pricing much better too. Also, w/o the camber plates or LCA mod, how much better will these extreme performance tires hold up to track use compared to just max performance tires (i.e. PSS). |

you would have 10% less width...245 is kind of already narrow...let alone 225 without camber all tires will get worn pretty bad maybe not as bad as the PSS as the shoulder is really soft but you will wear the outside and might have 60% left on the inside... |

Do you think I could fit a 18" 245 re71 or azenis up front without modification? The Falken seems to getting good reviews (see tire rack) for average/novice drivers like me, but I can see the argument for the RE-71 for a more advanced driver. Price for the 18 x 225 is $183 vs $130/tire. If I go down to 17" wheels, do you recommend a 245/40 or 245/45? Thanks again for the inputs! |

Not sure if 18 would fit depending on the tire height Also 17 tires will be cheaper. Else just do 225 al around, those will sure fit but 245 should fit with a ET40-42 wheel offset |

that should work... 17's wheels would also be lighter... for 245 you at least need 8' width

Be careful with the RS4 cause they are wider than normal, depending on the offset they might hit the strut |

Someone of this site posted that they made them work with the RS3: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1270120 Is the RS4 wider than the RS3? I could not find any of that info on the Hankook website. I figure worst case scenario, I could always use a small spacer on the front? Thanks. Last edited by skitch; 08-28-2017 at 02:49 PM.. |

Go to tire rack in the tech spec for each tire and look in the section width column |

Sure enough, the RS3 section width is 9.6 vs 10.1 on the RS4. Tread width is 9 and 9 for both. For reference, the RE71s for the same tire size are listed as 9.8 section width and 8.6 tread width. Think it is going to be a problem? Think I could fix it with a spacer is rubbing is a problem? |

Well I got my tire/wheel combo installed tonight, and so far, so good. I ended up with the Hankook RS-4 in a 245/40 R17 mounted on a 17x8 ET 40 rim all around from Tire Rack. The front was close, but to be honest, it doesn't look any tighter than when I was running my OEM tires/rims. So far no rubbing, but I've only put about 20 miles on the set.
I'll be taking them to an HPDE next weekend, and report back on how they performed. Thanks for all the help. |
