what do you guys think?
I'm looking at a 2016 M235 space grey auto HK sound, with 24000 miles for $36k. The carfax says accident vehicle towed on it, the dealer called the previous owner & he said he got it towed to have the Expel put on the car, would the Expel hide any repairs?
Any ideas or thoughts on this? I was going to take it to a dealer or a bodyshop to see if the car has been repaired. Thoughts on how bad this carfax will hurt me down the line on resell? good deal or keep looking? All opinions welcome. |

I would check to make sure there was no accident, that would clearly have an impact (pun intended) on price. I just bought a loaded 2015 m235i with 18k miles, can give you my ideas on pricing if interested, via pm.

Not saying this is a good deal or a bad deal, but remember a 2016 model year could have been put in service as early as July or August, 2015, so 24000 miles in essentially 18 months isn't really all that high - only a 16,000 mile per year average.

There are some excellent points provided here. Check the manufacture date, take the VIN to another dealer and ask them to run it, have a body shop measure the paint thickness that will tell you immediately if it has been painted. When I have looked for cars I used a site called CARGURUS.com. It is excellent and provides average pricing for any state you want and any distance from your location. This will give you an accurate idea of what they sell for. The only way to buy a car is being well educated. Good Luck.

This makes no sense
OP, usually if there is a small "accident" it's a good idea to obtain paperwork on what was done. Carfax also makes mistakes, I've see almost totaled cars with zero accidents on CF and then you could get an accident with just a small scratch or a dent. Xpel could be done through the insurance as well if there was a claim. Last edited by Kolyan2k; 03-05-2017 at 08:57 AM.. |

You have been given some very good advice as usual on this site. I would heed it and if you decide to buy the vehicle get it checked and documented.

I've had a dealer look up the service history, no surprises with it. Production date was 08/08/2015 I'm not to sure if I want this car because I don't want to spent the $55k for an M2.
I understand they are two completely different cars, but for $20k less I was thinking I could live with it. This has been driving me crazy Thank you for all the help |

I'd suggest getting a pre purchase inspection independently at a good bodyshop, to verify no major damage/repairs; expel can hide repairs, especially those paint-thickness readings (but often obvious from underneath). Then use the carfax as a bargaining tool to get the dealer to add an extended warranty, or cut you a break on the price of one. Not common with this type of car, but there is an ongoing practice of doing repairs privately to avoid carfax listings, usually w/o the benefits of a chassis jig or other pro touches; any decent bodyshop should be able to spot if it had serious repairs. Of course, if there are signs of major repairs, I'd walk, even w/ the extended warranty - too many expensive fiddly bits that can get half-broken in an accident and then fail later.
