Relocating to LA with 20% tint all around. How annoying is the cop situation gonna be
Hey guys!
I'm relocating to LA next month and currently running 20% Llumar all around, with Air Blue 80 on the windshield. How much grief are cops gonna give me. I'm driving an AW with black interior/rims...mostly likely living around Marina Del Ray area. Also can I just pay the tickets without removing the tints? Also I'm relocating from VA where our inspection stickers go in the middle of the windshield so I have a cut out around that part, therefore will have to get new tint. Any tint shop recommendations? Thanks in advance for your help and advice. |

Depends on the day of the week. If I see a PD cruiser coming up on me from behind, I'll drop my windows and avoid the grief if possible. IF they pull you over (which can and at some point will), the fine is about $25.00 which you have to pay the courts..but you are also forced to remove the tint and go to a CHP location to have them inspect and sign it off. So it's not the $, its the hassle really. I think the fine goes up if you get a 2nd one in a specific window of time (like 90 days..but I don't recall exactly).
So basically just be ready lower your windows at a moments notice. My wife's car had tint and lasted 5yrs before she got pulled over. Mine has been tinted 18mos and so far, so good.

I have no issues with tint or lack of front plate, but I also have only been pulled over once for a moving violation.
Just a heads up, there are a number of good shops but Southern California tend to be more expensive. No stickers required, but tint details are kept in glove box and doctors notes for exemption are not valid. I currently am using Suntek 30% + 70%, but have quotes from shops all over Socal. If you have an idea of which film you want to use and can share some details of which shops offered said film. |

Also, if you park in areas that are regularly patrolled by meter maids (beaches and downtown) when they give you a ticket for an expired parking meter they will often include one for no front plate and/or illegal tinting, depending on their mood.

Exactly why I went with 50% tint. You'll likely get hit the the front plate ticket first by a meter maid. I've got a few of those.

I think it really depends on the cop. Some couldn't be bothered with something as minute as tint, others are super picky. But if you do get pulled for it, it consists of a $25 ticket and removal of the tint - an additional charge at a tint shop. When I got a tint ticket I paid the cost of the ticket and then for new tint (my tint guy didn't charge me for removal since I went back the same day to apply new tint.) Total of $65 for me.

It definitely depends on the cop. I only have 30% all-around + 70% windshield; though, I do have dark Black Nappa leather. Many have much darker tint (20 or 5%). I think what additionally has helped me is that I only been pulled over once (warning for driving 45 in a 40), and I always put in tow-hook plate when parking on the street. |

15% on my e46...never bothered in over 3 years. 15% on my e82...had to remove at 18 months. 20% on my e92...never bothered for 3 year lease, turned in with tint. 20% on my 987.2...never bothered in a little over 2 years. Especially if the interior is lighter...you should be okay at 20%.

Tint and or front plate are probable cause. Basically cop can pull you over any time any place anywhere. No thanks. Not when they have AR 15 rifles on the motorcycles.
