Hearing a faint metallic whine
I have a 6MT 228i 2016 which just passed the 1200 mile mark. I have just recently noticed a faint metallic whine as the RPMs go up. It is really hard to pinpoint where it's coming from. Basically, when I am shifting through the gears and as the engine speed goes up, the whine pitch also goes up. It does not sound like the usual engine noise to me. Sorry for the vague details as i don't even think a audio recording would be able to pick this up. At first, I thought it was just the turbo spinning up but I am not exactly sure.
Is this something of concern? Please let me know. Thank you |

do you think this is worth taking to the dealership for? It is not loud at all, and sometimes you really have to pay attention to it to hear it. The car still drives great. I don't even think the dealership would be able to hear it.haha

That sounds like the turbo spooling to be honest. Depending on the weather and how dry the atmosphere is it could be noticeable.
You can probably take it in if you don't feel confident but usually any engine issues will get caught by the system and will go into limp mode. |

It's up to you if you feel it's abnormal, but I too can hear my transmission spinning pretty clearly without the radio on. It's more at low speed/low gear, but it's fairly pronounced.

yeah I guess I will bring it up during my first oil change in about 7000 miles. Same as you, I can hear it the most clearly when accelerating in 2nd gear. It also sounds a bit like a whistling.
