I initially wanted a bare bones white, sunroof delete, 6spd car with a couple of options like lumbar, MPE and LSD, which would have brought me to $52,500.. I got this car for $49,900 plus taxes. The car is already depreciated and I'm not the one who took that hit. I took a few hits in the past 5 years on new vehicles and I'm thankful I finally got my head out of my ass and starting thinking logically instead of impulsively. Just my outlook on it. At the end of the day, the car had 12k kms and still looked, smelled and drove like new. To me it's a brand new car with some break in miles.. Another dealership in Vancouver had a Performance Edition model and they were asking $6k more for the exact same CPO scenario except it had a few less miles. I feel I got a great deal Here's the car when it was listed, which lasted less than a day on their site before I made my move

Removing price, AWD, brand, and looks from the equation I'd probably choose the 235 based mainly on RWD layout and that sweet I6 engine. However, once I put all the factors back in it's splitting hairs with price, practicality, and unassuming brand tipping things in the Golf's favor. But that represents what's important to me and is likely different from what's important to you or anyone else. IMO any car choice outside of a base model Corolla is an irrational decision. It's all about knowing where to draw that line for yourself based on weighing all the variables in your life against your personal tastes and desires. |

They are the worst. If I get another 235 or 240 next, it will be xDrive this time and day one I am taking the stock wheels and tires off and replacing with some 17" BBS rims and DWS 06 rubber. Problem solved.

Either that or carbon brakes. It's worth every bit of 10k to not have this annoyance all the time.

Luckily the road conditions down here are not much of a concern, the 40 stock rubber wears and rides nicely. |

Easier to keep looking clean than some BBS RS's that's for sure!

When the new R first started arriving I stopped by my local VW dealer and asked a salesman when the manual R was expected. The Sales Manager was standing nearby and treated me like an 18 year old looky-loo trying to snag a test drive(I'm 59, BTW).
Couple that with the fact that the Louisville VW dealers are averse to hiring techs with opposable thumbs and you can understand why I removed the R from consideration. As an aside, in 2007 I was considering a new GTI. I called the same dealer's service department to ask how much the 40k mile DSG service cost. The service advisor's response? "What's a DSG?"

- if you want to take the best out of this surprisingly good car, go DCT! Yeah, I know - for most of my 45 years long driving career, I've been a manual transmission purist like many of you guys on this forum. But the fact is the R with DCT is a dream to drive; not only is the transmission faster than any of us humans, but its computer control is executed in the absolutely spot-on fashion. This in fact is one of those aspects that I prefer so much over the (great still) AT8 in my M235i...
