Turbo inlet pipe upgrade
Reading thru BryanF22 thread about CP's, post # 15 got my attention:-
http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=15 The stock inlet pipe - item 1 in the picture above - is common, to both PWG and EWG cars and it tapers to the stock PWG compressor wheel size. Great for PWG cars and despite EWG turbos having a larger compressor wheel, it appears BMW reused the same inlet pipe from old turbo. To conclude then, for EWG cars, the connection at compressor housing is smaller than the compressor wheel. I had hoped the equivalent M2 part would be an OEM upgrade ie less / no tapering suited to larger inlet of the EWG turbo. Alas, M2 shares the same part. I have read Pure hi flow inlet pipe is a canny upgrade as it opens up the diameter of the inlet pipe allows the EWG turbo to breathe more easily ie lower PWM values to achieve the same boost levels. Any tips/go-bys on DIY install of Pure hi flow inlet pipe most welcome. Thanks in advance, BP

I'm not sure how useful the larger inlet pipe will be on a stock turbo. If you upgrade to a larger turbo I would highly recommend it to take full advantage of the turbo.
Edit: also I would recommend purchasing the preassembled unit from pure, otherwise you'll need to cut and glue your stock inlet.

Yes I plan to go for option 2. I've read folks have seen drops in PWM whilst maintaining same boost levels on EWG cars with stock turbo. There's definitely merit in opening up the inlet side even for stock EWG users. Any standalone retrofit install threads on here or PDF of the PURE install instructions to have a look at ? Cheers, BP

Not easiest install. If building n55 w turbo and fuel upgrade maybe look into. But the cost per HP may not make sense compared to say N54. Inlet install would be a conversation to say u did it to a n55. Rather save and spend money on nicer suspension for example.

Fitting the pipe with large bore will remove this restriction allowing better flow, less load on the turbo and improved throttle response.

I upgraded all the piping because i didn't want to have the other hoses bust under pressure like the CP did.
The piping from ER for the FMIC is much bigger than stock. maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch larger so more air does flow. i think its a great upgrade for any car, more air, better cooling. Great product by ER.

drop front bumper and intercooler as well as intake.
Everything is right there. I had a shop do it with a lift, took 3 hours.

Installation of Pure high flow inlet pipe should not be difficult.
I've installed Turbo to FMIC and FMIC to TB charge pipes (ER ones), GFB DV+, Wagner Evo2 Comp FMIC and to my mind, pure inlet installation should be a piece of cake compared to DV+ installation... I'm also interested in installing this Pure Inlet pipe. But I'm waiting for Victor to manufacture SS spacers for F8x TS install... One thing at a time |

Inlet pipe is easy. Remove intake pipe that goes to airbox. Remove 1 vacuum? Line that connects to lower inlet part. There is indeed 1 bolt that needs removing on the inlet/compressor housing. Then pull lower inlet out of compressor housing. To install new pure inlet you dont reuse the bolt. The inlet pipe has 2 or 3 o rings that keeps it in place. All can be done from top of the car.

Post from another forum - seems like its definitely worth doing for EWG cars to take out the restriction at the compressor wheel side of the turbo....

As darkiedm4 says its as simple as that, once you are doing it and see it in front of you it makes sense.
There are 2 bolts in total, one that joins the oem inlet to the turbo compressor housing and another that connects further up to the head (its pictured in the above pure inlet photo). You only reuse the one in the photo. The bolt connecting it to the compressor housing needs to be accessed and removed from below. The above logs that bee pee posted are mine and that is my initial findings. I have a stage 2 LPFP and TBI so I'll look to push the stock EWG turbo to see what it can do....the inlet will certainly help me! |
