Anyone did DIY oil change?
Some people said the first oil change in 5000 miles or 10000 miles , now i am in 8000 miles
and planning to have oil change. Any DIY to change? I dont want to back to the dealer to do it. Too far, too expensive and waste time. Hope some one could share the experiences. |

BMW states 30,000ks for first oil change. I wouldn't believe others about changing oil early. Why would BMW try and kill their own engines by not changing oil earlier because BMW knows their engines.

Google 'Mike Miller's Old School Maintenance Schedule' it provides a detailed of guide of what/when to service prior to the newer servicing schedules that BMW implemented.
FWIW I plan to change the oil at 1,200 as it is not that expensive and fairly easy to do yourself. |

I recently did this and it was very easy with decent tools. 17mm socket, 86mm 16 flute oil filter wrench, good oil & filter. After you've done it once its a 20 minute job no problem.

I am still waiting for delivery of the car but here are some good posts on oil changes for a M235i. It should be similar for the 218i.

Oil changes are very simple, one nut and crush washer on the oil pan to drain.. Up top you have the special oil filter wrench you need to twist off the oil filter cap.
https://www.ecstuning.com/News/BMW_N..._Removal_Tool/ Pop out the old one, put in the new oil filter, change the o-ring and gasket, tighten back up. Important step: clean up the oily mess up top and underneath. Fill up with 7 quarts of oil! Do note the oil filler can hold the bottle upright, but be careful of foil in the bottle (remove it completely), and make sure the plastic twist seal from the bottle doesn't come off. But your wasting your money if your changing under the 12,000 mile interval unless your rag-dolling the car on the track. |

Took me forever to find a post with the oil filter cap tool size... 86mm..
I've got a 230ix on order, can someone tell me where the oil filter canister/housing is located on this? My sales guy has no idea, even though he drives one because he just relies on the BMW maintenance program. BTW, anyone know if I can use a Fumoto valve?

to change the filter, the filter is on the side of the engine near the back.
The drain plug is under the car, and typically has a little door cut out of the belly pan for you to locate and drain without having to remove the belly pan. You can order oil and filter kits on sites like https://www.ecstuning.com/ for much cheaper than BMW will charge you.

Oh snap! Look how low that thing is.. No wonder I didn't see it. I wonder how hard it's going to be to get at without oil dripping everywhere.

Great to know that! It's quite an achievement on my part too when I did my oil change last year. I used the Everglide as my oil additive as I was advised to use a Moly-Graphene based oil treatment for better protection and higher mpg.

Hello,
I was interested to read the different opinions on the oil change and comments on servicing. It made me think about my car's service intervals. I was of the opinion (and even think at some point was told this by BMW) that the first service was at 30,000kms. However, today, I received an automatic email reminder from the garage suggesting a minor service was now due (according to the teleservice system information they received). My car, 218i, has now done 22,000 kms and the message on the dashboard says service due in 9000km or June 2017. So, I haven't reached the kms yet, but it seems I have met the time. Does it really need a minor service (no oil change has been done yet)? Any thoughts on this? Many thanks. |

FYI.. I did the 1st oil chance on on a B46 230i, you just need a 27mm socket and swivel to remove the filter cap. It's a a royal PITA because there's not much room to get it out.
