Get a wifi or Bluetooth obd reader, you can see your iat temps with most of them, if your spiking above 100f then you prob could benefit from a larger intercooler. It's really all going to depend on where and how hard and long you drive the car.

To OP, do you ever plan on running on the track? Then yes, it's recommended. If you search the ER Intercooler threads, you can see they did actual testing and it makes a huge difference performance wise. I'm talking about running your car hard at the track and not to your local McDonalds or a short run on a dyno.

Wagner EVO I performance vs stock
This is the smallest intercooler they offer, the bigger ones will provide better cooling as well but might be an overkill if you do not track your car often

Back to back pulls on the highway or track events is where intercoolers really shine.
As you heat soak, that's when you start losing power, efficiency and consistency. Intercoolers are more efficient and gain back power that was lost from heat soak. If you do 3 runs back to back on a stock intercooler, each run will be that much slower compared to the next. |

I have a m235i, with NY's RK-tune flash tune, Downpipe, and aluminum CP. Supposedly 380~whp/440wtq. I've been trying to do research regarding how much power is loss through heatsoak,on my stock intercooler? 5%,10%? After a few repeated WOT pulls? Trying to justify purchasing a 7" FMIC.
I did try to search on here as well as google, only find people saying "loss power" nothing specific. Thank you! "I know this is a revive" |

This is interesting, on multiple different forums, car manufacturers it seems to be fairly obvious that intercoolers don't make horsepower, they prevent you from loosing it after heat soak. When does heat soak occur, that's arbitrary based on how the car is being used. Ever been to the track, I'm sure most of you have atsome point and seen all different types of drivers/tuners putting ice on their intakes, spraying their intercoolers (Mitsubishi and Subaru used sprayers on their intercoolers from the factory). You can run a stock intercooler, on a hot day it won't perform as well as an upgrade, on a cold day, probably won't notice a difference.
