Sound System upgrade

Unfortunately my M235i came with the standard sound system. So i'm thinking about an upgrade. I'm open to suggestions and ideas from anybody that may have already been down this route. Go with OEM system or go for an after market system? Probably drawn to the OEM system to keep things standard. I guess I will need an amp' to drive the extra and bigger demand speakers - where does this fit?

Amp is probably best in the boot imo. Agree the stock System is alright; I was thinking about potential upgrades. Keep us updated what you end up doing.

I added the Focal BMW speaker kit. Definitely an improvement in the mids and highs. I bought the HK speaker sails to keep the OEM look.

May look at adding an amp and replacing the under chair woofers too. The amp goes in the boot. If you're after suggestions there are quite a few threads on upgrading the sound system in the main forum.

Thanks, I'll check those out. When you installed the HK sails was the wiring there or did you have to run extra wiring?

There's no wiring there, but if you buy the focal kit then it includes all the wiring.

If you're after an amp, check the group buy thread here: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1175145

I have put my name down. Won't find a better amp for this price!

Is this just a plug and play system? I guess the original amp is located in the boot - I didn't take out the liner but I'm thinking it must be between the rear seat and the battery somewhere if it is (?). Can you PM me the deal you're talking about please - I'm very interested.

Just been reading a lot of threads (including yours) in the main forum about the Amp and speakers upgrade. I'm not sure I will go for the Amp at this stage, especially as the ASD has to be coded off. I kinda like the ASD and I'm not big on mucking about with the coding yet. From what I can research it appears that the plug and play thing is not quite that, in as much as I will need access to a Windows based laptop with the coding software I'm setup for a house full of Apple hardware. I guess I could get myself a cheap Windows based laptop and the coding software and the correct codes - sort of defeats the 'plug and play" attraction of the replacement AMP - and as I said, I like the ASD ( at this stage). Maybe I should hear the difference in the output before I decide.

Yes if you like the ASD then I guess you should leave the stock amp. Maybe get some new speakers and call it a day. Too bad you are not in Brisbane otherwise I could code it off for you to try out.

Hey mate, thanks for the coding offer, I've never experienced the drive without the noise. Thanks also for your input and info, I'm definitely looking at the upgraded speakers and the sail tweeters.

I forgot to ask you where you were able to get the HK sails from.

Is this the HK marked moulding/sails? Did the focal brand tweeters fit okay?
Apologies for all the questions.

Yes it is the HK mouldings, as they are the only ones available for F22. They come with HK tweeters installed. Unfortunately you can't buy mouldings without HK tweeters. You just need to pull out the tweeters and replace with the focals, it is a direct plug and play if you buy the Focal IFBMW-S kit. The focal tweeters hook up to the focal front door speakers so it has all the wiring included.

I don't have HK, if I had HK I wouldn't need to buy the mouldings (I have HIFI only).

There are no wires pre-installed to fit the sail tweeters though. If you want to put in the mouldings, you will either need to buy aftermarket speakers (like the Focal IFBMW) or else you have to splice the existing wires to hook up to the HK sails.

Oh right... me too I bought a car that was on it's way already... had everything except the HK system.

So if I buy the Focal IFBMW system and the tweeters it'll work? I'm guessing the shop can hook it all up...

Or I can just get the moulding and not have it wired? I'm actually quite fine with the sound... just want the look

Yes either of the above will work... although it'd be a bit weird to have speakers with no sound coming out haha

You could also not buy the Focal kit and just have the shop splice the wires on your front door speakers, so you get sound out of the HK tweeters (the HK sails come with tweeters). Will probably cost you $150 for the sails + ~$100-$150 for their time

It seems really cheap... the HK moulding... US$50 each and with tweeters... anyways... I guess I probably wouldn't go through all these trouble ordering it online, going to the shop without upgrading the system...

You got a price for the focal kit? Is that what you went with?

Yeah, it's cheap (but then again it's just a piece of plastic, piece of mesh and a crappy tweeter).

The Focal kit is $550 delivered on eBay (search for IFBMW-S) from a local retailer. I just went to an audio shop and told them to price match it.
