Tire install w/o marring wheel
So how do tire techs take off old tire install & balance new tire w/o scratching or putting any marks on wheel - even the inside of the barrel ?
Are there questions about what type of machines they have to insure wheels stay perfect ? For people who purchase wheel/tire sets mail order do they come without any hints of scratches? My OEM wheels look perfect so is the method the manufacturers use the same as dealers ? TIA Last edited by overcoil; 08-12-2014 at 05:25 PM.. |

A lot of it comes down to appropriate technique and experience. Though, there are a few machines that do make a bit easier on the tech: Touchless mounting machines etc
Producing blemishes/nicks when mounting tires should NOT be considered normal practice.

What we do is have tire machines that have Teflon shoes. ( the part that touches the wheel.). If it is clean it will not scratch or mark the wheel. As for the tire prybar to stretch the tire on and off. Just some skill allows the operator to not mark the wheel. The lower the profile the harder it becomes.

Newer Hunter Tire machines can do nearly everything without too much human skill. Watch some YouTube videos on how cool these machines are and balance the tires with road force for precision installation.
